The opportunity to be a part of the West Bengal govt's initiative "3rd Bishnupur Festival" at Dilli Haat (New Delhi) exposed me to some of the ultra-precious gems of the rich folk culture of Eastern India. This was probably the first time I could witness in my own eyes the superb Chau Dance, a dance that I have heard of since my childhood. I also witnessed Bihu dance from Assam and Sambalpuri dance from Odisha. While I had already seen Bihu dance before, and was already an admirer of the same, this was my first brush with Sambalpuri Dance. And I was so impressed. I always had a soft corner for Sambalpur, as that was the first place in Odisha that I visited in my life (way back in 1987). And now I am so happy to know that it boasts of such a spectacular dance.
But my best appreciation goes for the Raibeshi Dance, originally from the district of Birbhum in West Bengal. A classic combination of high quality of dancing and acrobatic skills, Raibeshi Dance is undoubtedly one of the best gems of the folk culture of the entire India. My hats off to the performers who gifted us with such a thrilling experience.
Honestly, India's folk culture is one of the best creations of God.
