Returning home on time in the eve is a luxury sometimes these days after wrapping up work. My office provides the evening "Work From Home" flexibility using the office laptop provided that I have a good internet connection at home. Since the O-Laptop is secure, we cannot use 3G USB sticks on it. Hence, internet needs to be sourced from a wi-fi source ONLY. This necessitated obtaining of a Tikona broadband connection and making it wi-fi as well which I did using a Linksys router. Tikona frankly speaking sucks. Its got good speed in the mornings and late nights for say movie downloads but is of little use during the day time. Hence, this connection was useless for doing office work in the evenings since the bandwidth would hardly rise about 10 kbps which isn't even enough to render the connection to my VPN. I do have a micromax 3G modem which I bought along with my BSNL 3G SIM card about a year ago. Now, I started looking at a solution to convert my 3G stick's connection to a wireless connection. Linksys just didn't have the USB port or facilitation to do it. I therefore started scouting for such a device on the internet and found Micromax and TP-LINK portable 3G wireless routers in there. While the Micromax router looked good and feature rich, it was priced at around 2.5K - 3K at least and was battery powered/charger equipped. The TP-Link model No TL-MR3020 however ran on a USB port and didn't have a self -battery option (the next model MR3040 has this but isn't available currently at the time of writing this review). Coming back, TP-L 3020 also had powerful features such as primary wired connection and secondary 3G stick USB connection getting converted to an ALWAYS ON and RELIABLE wireless, secure internet connection where your internet will never fail. This is because it will rely on your wired internet connection as the primary source and if that fails, automatically switch on to your 3G stick connection ensuring smooth internet access at all times. Alternately, only 3G connection can also be used. I have always used this option until now. Well, this device's reviews also impressed me. The device's development team also made the device compatible with most 3G USB Modems used in India. The price was around 1.7K which made me go for it from Flipkart. Its also available on eBay. The device's box looks rich and unboxing it is a joy. The device can either be powered by your laptop's spare USB port or by a power adapter provided standard with the device. You can configure it for the 1st time using its in built IP portal pages the same way as a standard router. The only trouble I had with it is using BSNL 3G with it in the beginning. This device if wired to the laptop using a wired flat LAN wire provided standard (not the power USB to mini USB cable, don't assume wrongly) will connect in sometime using BSNL 3G and Micromax router. If you try to connect wirelessly next time, it will JUST NOT CONNECT because BSNL 3G connections using the SIM seem to be bad. I then started using Idea 3G and after the initial hiccups, I am well connected each time. I don't have to use the wired connection with the router anymore. I just power it using my office laptop and the 3G connection using the office Modem connected to the router is UP in a few minutes. I had a high speed, secure, wireless (wi-fi) connection up in a matter of 2 minutes and its really effective. Now, you can connect your smart phone, ipad, iphone, laptop(s) all at once to 1 3G connection and use all of them simultaneously, that too on the go too. The device also uses wired ports in hotels to create a wi-fi network. So now, whether you are in a park, train or on the move, you can create your own 3G wi-fi secure network and share it with other users as well depending on your will.Other features it offers:1. Retransmission of another wi-fi signal2. Bandwidth restrictions user wise in case you want to share3. WPA2 and all standard security standards4. Compatible with most indian 3G modems and devices sold in the market.5. Compact, fits in the palm of your hand or your pocket :)ONE WARNING: Please check for your 3G modem being in the compatible list for this device before purchasing it. If its not compatible, I guess you could request the support team to do so and wait or ask them if there's a workaround before you purchase it. I say this because its indeed frustrating to wait for the device to identify and connect to the modem and though I assumed in my case that it may be the Micromax modem compatibility issue (though on the list), it was in fact the BSNL connection not connecting and making the router go for identification of the modem again and again. With Idea, I just connect portably anywhere. :) Cost of the TP-LINK portable, wireless router: Rs. 1790 approx with shipping on Flipkart/eBayCost of a typical 3G modem these days: Rs. 1600/- (I bought the unlocked Micromax MMX310 device for Rs. 2500 more than a year ago).
