A new family has come to the house just next to ours. I know nothing about this family except what I observed willingly or unwillingly as neighbour. There is one old couple, one young couple and three small girls all around 7-8 year age group. I did not pay much attention to my new neighbour as there is nothing special with them. Two three days back, my wife was unwell and I was doing the house cores. When I was spreading out the washed clothes in sun at our terrace for drying out, I saw one of the little girls of my new neighbour was also doing the same thing. She was very little and struggling to reach the nylon rope from which the wet cloth was supposed to be hanged. She was trying hard and there was fear in her face. I could not resist myself from asking her where her mother was. The reply I got was totally unexpected. The little girl told me that she was working as maid in that family and she belonged to a remote village of Bihar. Other two little girls are not her sister; they are the daughters of "malkin". The little girl was so innocent that she asked me whether I was also servant to my house. I realise that she was searching for love and affection and company of people who are in same class. I told her yes my little girl I was doing the same work for my family. She became easy after hearing that and started chatting. I gather from her that she was from a very poor family of a remote village. Owner of the house is also from the same village and he has brought her as maid. Other two girls are the daughters of the young couple of the family. Then I notice that other two girls are well dressed and cared. She woke up at 5-30 in the morning and goes to bed at 10-30 at night. She used to do all house cores. When other two girls study or play she is busy with sweeping or dusting. I find it very difficult to digest the entire episode. But I can not make out how to help the little girl. I consulted my wife and asked her whether I should inform Police regarding child labour or not. My wife gave me a long look and told "if you want the little girl to starve in her village then you inform police and if you want not to disturb the reasonably good shelter the girl has got then you should not. I understand how much helpless we are.
