Here I am again - today has been exhausting - but extremely rewarding.
It is easy to share my learning today as I have promised Arun ji that I will write about Brain Gym exercises ... To those who are not familiar with the term - it simply means a gymming regime for the Brain !!
Our birthright is the natural ability to utilise both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. But, conditioning and culture and life experiences often triggers a supremacy of one hemisphere over the other . ( In the 1980 s Dr. Roger Sperry was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for his pioneering work int his area) .
The main attributes of both sides are as follows:
Left Brain
Uses logic or reason
Thinks in words
Deals in specifics
Time bound
Extroverted
Individual identification
Controlled or ordered style
Right Brain
Uses emotions and intuition and creativity
Thinks in pictures
Deals with the whole
Free of time constraints
Introverted
Group identification
Spontaneous and free manner
In order to develop the potential of both sides which is required for a stress free life, we can develop and give attention to both sides. I am describing a couple of these here .
Cross Crawls
This exercise helps coordinate right and left brain by exercisingthe information flow between the two hemispheres. It is useful forspelling, writing, listening, reading and comprehension.
Stand or sit. Put the right hand across the body to theleft knee as you raise it, and then do the same thing for the left handon the right knee just as if you were marching. Just do this either sitting or standing for about 2 minuitesHook Ups
This works well for nerves before a test or special event such asmaking a speech. Any situation which will cause nervousness calls for afew "hook ups" to calm the mind and improve concentration.
Stand or sit. Cross the right leg over the left at the ankles. Take your right wrist and cross it over the left wrist and link up the fingers so that the right wrist is on top. Bend the elbows out and gently turn the fingers in towardsthe body until they rest on the sternum (breast bone) in the center ofthe chest. Stay in this position. Keep the ankles crossed and the wrists crossed and thenbreathe evenly in this position for a few minutes. You will benoticeably calmer after that time. The simple exercises given above are based on the copyrighted work of Paul E.Dennison, Ph.D., and Gail E. Dennison. Brain Gym is a registeredtrademark of Brain Gym® International . Please do not sue me - I am just trying to spread the word and not claiming this as my own !!
It is a fascinating field and a lot of work has been done and I can personally vouch for the benefits of doing these simple exercises . Even simple things like trying to write with both hands at the same time - hold a pencil in both hands and try to draw figure 8 s at the same time or write the alphabets at the same time ... help a great deal to rejuvenate the brain and lead to whole brain sync.
Do try these out for yourself and check out more on this topic as there is a lot of learning available - I cannot get into details here as my eyes are drooping .
Good night
