We went to Kerala, for the summer vacation. We went so manyplaces like Autherapalli, Malampurz dam & also we went to Guruvayurtemple. We stayed in a hotel (ELITE) near that temple. We stayed there for 2 days. The room rent was less, it was only Rs.750per room. A famous temple called Guruvayur is also call as Guruvayoor.It is a pilgrim town and a municipality in Thrissur district. It lies25 km to the northwest of Thrissur city. I am very much interested toknow the ancient stories of the temple. About The Temple: Guruvayur ismost famous for its temple, which is many centuries old and one of themost important temple in Kerala.


The temple's deity is LordGuruvayurappan is also called as Balagopalan (Krishna in the form of achild). While non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the temple,Guruvayurappan has a strong believers from many religions.KrishnanattamKali, a noted classical performing art that was instrumental in theinitial development of the world-famous dance-drama Kathakali, has agood base in Guruvayur as the temple administration (GuruvayurDevaswom) runs a Krishnattam institute. The temple also holds theannual festival (ulsavam) in the Malayalam month of Kumbham(February-March) during which it hosts classical arts like Kathakali,Koodiyattam, Panchavadyam, Thayambaka and Panchari Melam.


The templeis being run by the Guruvayur Devaswom Management Committee under thedirections of Government of Kerala. The temporary members of committeeare "nominated" by the ruling party of the state government from timeto time. The permanent members are the current heads of the families ofChennas Mana (the heridatory Thantri of the temple). Another attractionis the famous elephant sanctuary (Punnathur kotta) near the templewhere elephants are trained for temple purposes. The sanctuarycurrently has more than 60 elephants, all of them were offered bydevotees of Lord Guruvayurappan. One of the leading names associatedwith the city, Guruvayur Kesavan, is a legendary elephant that hasfound a place in the state's folklore.


The temple is a major venuefor Hindu marriages in Kerala. A record number of marriages take placeeach day at the temple, sometimes crossing 100 in a single day.Devotees of Guruvayurappan think it is highly auspicious to startmarried life in front of the lord. The International Society forKrishna Consciousness has started guest house for pilgrims to the town.The place has several hotels and restaurants, and is a booming upmarketpocket. The land value is also very high, it is because of that temple.Most of the peoples are interested to buy land near Guruvayur temple.Transport Facilities: Buses operate every few minutes from ThrissurBus Stand. Buses also operate from Ernakulam, Paravur, Kottayam,Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kodungallur and Trivandrum. Passenger trainsoperate from the station to Thrissur and Kochi, as well as an overnightexpress train to Trivandrum and further to Chennai. CochinInternational Airport, the nearest airport, is some 80 km. fromGuruvayur. If you are coming from calicut it will take approximately2 hrs to reach guruvayoor by bus. Guruvayur has a single plat formrailway station with a few daily services.


Guruvayur had a populationof 22,529. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Themale literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 85%. The Guruvayur ShriKrishna Temple is one of the most famous temples in India. It islocated in the town of Guruvayur in Thrissur district of Kerala. Thepresiding deity is Shri Krishna, in the standing posture with fourhands that carry the Sankhu, the Sudarshana chakram, the lotus and themace. The Lord is worshipped in his many manifestations, the favoritewith devotees being the 'Sankalpa' of the Lord as 'Unnikrishnan'. Fordevotees Guruvayur is "Bhooloka Vaikuntham" and Dakshina Dwaraka.
