After the lukewarm response to omnia series and the downer of Lumia 800 and 900, everyone including critics, tech pundits and Mobile enthusiasts had written of microsoft's foray into the mobile -tablet arena. But the release of Samsung Ativ S, HTC 8x and Nokia Lumia 920 has stirred on a new debate and has given Microsoft and some bad performing OEM's (no brownies for guessing ;p) a new leash of life. The battle has begun on the third world which had ceased to exist till now. You would have guessed by now that the third world I'm talking about is the Windows Phone 8 operating System, which by the looks of it is nothing short of classy. I'm not going into the technical details of the operating system as this blog is meant to be a comparison of the three OEM's new releases.

Lets start with the Display Size

  1. Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a 4.5 inch IPS lcd puremotion display with a resolution of 1280 x 768 , that makes it approximately 336 ppi , which is better than most other smartphones in the market including the iphone which stands at 332 ppi.

  2. Samsung ATIV S comes with a 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED display with the resolution of 1280 X720 Which makes it a good 306 ppi , which may be dissapointing considering that nokia managed quite a higher amount.

  3. HTC 8X comes with a 4.3 inch with a resolution of 1280 x 720 which stands at 342 ppi whihch seems to be the best among the three, but if you are a fan of a slightly bigger screen (and not a slate unlike the note2) you would like the lumia 920

So it seems that there is a good competition between the Lumia and 8X in this arena. Its just a matter of the size of your pockets

Now coming to the Processor

All the three phones come with the same processor, the Snapdragon S4 clocking at 1.5 ghz.. Which stops the comparison here itself.

The Camera

  1. The Nokia Lumia comes with an 8.7 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front camera, with a dual led flash and an f/2.0 aperture . moreover it is equipped with the pureview technology which can take wonderful images even in low light conditions. The low light here would be so low that the samsung galaxy s3 and Apple Iphone 4s wont capture anything at all. Th pureview can be considered the best smartphone camera technology in the market with an advancement to the Backside illumination technology.

  2. The Samsung ATIV S has an 8 mp camera as in that of the galaxy s3 with a led flash. so the camera may seem disappointing with respect to the lumia.

  3. The HTC 8X comes with a 8 MP cam with the BSI technology which is similar to the pureview . But not as clear in low light conditions albeit being one of the best.

All of the above does HD video recording at 1080p.

So the winner here is Nokia Lumia 920. If you are a click and share person then Lumia is the way to go.

Coming to Battery Life

  1. The Nokia Lumia is equipped with a 1800 mAH battery that claims to give 10 hours of talktime and 67 hours of music playback time. which is good

  2. The Samsung ATIV S comes with a 2300 mAh battery , same as that of the galaxy s3. so thats a long distance runner for you ;)

  3. The HTC 8X comes with a 1800 mAH battery . good , but considering htc's history of underperforming batteries , I wont bet on this one too.

The winner here would be Samsung ATIV S with a great battery life.

The Storage

  1. The Lumia comes with an onboard storage of 32 GB with is not expandable, a reason why lumia 900 and 800 had failed. But considering that as a windows phone buyer would never want to fill your homescreen with apps, this may not be a downer.

  2. The Samsung Ativ S comes with an onboard storage of 16 gb which can be expanded using the micro sd card slot. Thats great :)

  3. The HTC 8X comes with an onboard storage with a non expandable memory which is a downer. HTC can loose a lot of indian customers due to this.

The winner here still remians undecided because I think a 32 gb on board memory is very good. There is a good race between Lumia and ATIV.

The look and feel

  1. The Nokia Lumia 920 is a great phone with a revolutionary design. It weighs around 180 gms and its around 10 mm thin which is great. (Its heavyweight , not featherweight like Iphone 5 ;p) With a uni body design and multicolour option nokia has mesmerised both tech pundits and enthusiasts alike.

  2. The Samsung ATIV's design is good with 8.7 mm thickness, the thinnest among the three. what actually turns me off is that the design is not anything different from the traditional samsung phones.

  3. The HTC 8X is again 10mm thick and looks very similar to the Lumia 820 but again offers a multicolor option and is great to hold in the hand.

There is a good competition between HTC 8X and Lumia 920 in this respect.

Finally the winner of the battle would only be decided on the price and timing of its release . Nokia has declared a 2013 Q1 release , with samsung announcing a Q4 2012 release and HTC 8X considering a november release . Prices is still in speculation. But the timing of the HTC seems right, november being a festive season.
