Dear reader, My first review on this site is the second review I've written of ONE OF OUR AIRCRAFT IS MISSING, a superlative WWII thriller made in 1942 by the writing/directing team that also made THE RED SHOES and BLACK NARCISSUS. But the reviews are completely different and I saw the movie again before writing the second one, so this isn't cheating. The review on MouthShut is in two pieces because I wrote it before I knew that we have to keep reviews shorter than 8,000 characters. The two parts are at the bottom of this page. Or, the first part is at: http://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=15612&r=1 and the second part is here: http://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=15650&r=1 IF YOU TRY EITHER OF THOSE LINKS, you'll have to take out the spaces that come in the ''readreview'' part. They don't show up when I edit this page, so I don't know how to delete them. But if you leave them in, all you'll get is an error report. I wrote the long review so of course I think it is brilliant. But if you have suggestions about what to cut to make it fit in one review, please send them along. Thanks. The experience of watching a war movie after the horrible events of Sept. 11 is quite different from that of watching the same movie last summer, and I've tried to suggest some of that in the new review. If you'd like to read the first review, please send me an e-mail and I'll send you the URL. I'd put it here, except that might be crass self-promotion. If this message by itself seems crass, please accept my assurances that I will gain nothing from your reading the first review. Not even a penny. The only way I could profit from your reading that first review is if you were moved to mail me cash. Although I do not know you, that strikes me as exceedingly unlikely. Best wishes, Peter . Reading, movies, travelling and men. It doesn't have to be in that order, although unfortunately it has been.

Dear Nick, Your original critique added this one to my 'Want to Read' list and now your emphasis has moved it up. If you're taking suggestions: Please consider revising and re-posting your THE BEST OF JACKSON PAYNE review. That book deserves as broad an audience as you can get it. Best wis read more...

Dear Pam, Your insightful, concise recommendation should draw some attention to a book that deserves it. You (and the Pulitzer committee) are right that it's worth reading. Best wishes, Peter

It is terrifically funny, and it's a welcome indication that perhaps this site has something to recommend it. A middle name of 'Percival'? I don't want to get in dutch with anyone, but that sounds suspiciously Hollandish. (Or is that supposed to be Hollandaise? I hit the sauce so hard I can never read more...

Dear Abbey, Thank you for the welcome. I appreciate your graciousness. Dear Nick and Ed, Of course you're write about keeping writing short, but that's probably easier to do in advance. Dear neuronmaster, Your review would be much stronger if you included some passages from the book. For example, your suggestion that some of Hitler's writing is bad would be more convincing if you followed it with a quote of his bad writing. And saying the book contains inaccuracies is not as read more...
