Bakha was a diligent and honest worker. He was admired for his dexterity. He had some sense of cleanliness. He handled the commodes so carefully. He is an admirable character. He is marked for his fortitude, tolerance, humility,
Bakha’s adulation for the White Man is not only that of an innocent youth’s admiration for sola toupees and immaculate white dresses, but has deeper roots. It stems from the fact that they treat him as a human being. He has been much influenced by the Tommies (English Soldiers) who have always treated him as a human being.

Bakha always thinks of his friends and is almost obsessed with the “English” way of living. Bakha even looks down on his neighbors as he feels superior to them whereas he greets the white boys of the high-caste. Rakha was the younger son of Lakha and younger brother of Bakha. He was playing always outside with bad boys. He was never sincere to his work.
We must realise that it is -------- which prevents them from touching us'', what excuse is given by Lakha
Untouchables were expected to let their presence be known by shouting "sweepers coming" repeatedly . Unfortunately Bakha had forgotten to shout when he arrived and accidentally touched a man of high caste and his mistakes become an excuse for accusations from both his father and the touched man

Bakha’s dreams and trances are the principal way he escapes mentally from the realities of his life. The dreams he has when he takes a nap while begging for food are particularly escapist. He sees himself in a classroom achieving his dream of learning how to read.
