There were two reasons I went to see this movie. The first was the charming, cute, blue-eyed, and accented Hugh Grant (hes 43, who cares). The second reason was Sandra Bullocks comedic antics. After the sweet, far-fetched, yet funny Miss Congeniality she has become a fixture in silly romantic comedies.
Like any other romantic comedy you know how its going to end, guy gets girl or vice versa. Its the plot that makes it interesting and worthwhile. Id have to say what made me like this movie was Hugh Grants acting.
His character billionaire bachelor, George Wade, was an ideal role for Grant. He pulled off Georges self-centered, slightly naive, yet charming personality very well. Bullock was good but not great. In the reviews I read before going to see the movie she was described as neurotic and I think that sums her up. From the compulsive overeating to trying to save the old theater at the beginning she was pretty insane.
The dialogue throughout the movie was excellent. Their banter was witty and hilarious although sometimes overly sweet and as fluffy as a marshmallow. Grants facial expressions were priceless but Bullock looked a little dazed throughout the movie, maybe it was the bangs or something but I dont know.
Yes, some of the plot situations were a little far-fetched but in general the plot was well done. I just wished the movie couldve gone a little slower in building up the romance between Grant and Bullock.
I despised Alicia Witt (I think her name was Jane in the movie) from the moment she came onto the screen. She was the bad guy and she combined many stereotypes into one, the greedy goldigger, the skanky slut, the possessive girlfriend, and the oh-so-nice girl next door. One of my favorite scenes in the movie has to be Bullock and Witts cat fight over the stapler close to the end.
This movie was in general good. The end was very sappy with Grants speech, but the speech was original and performed well by him. It was a bit characteristic with the kiss at the end but, hey, thats expected. I would definitely recommend this film. See it with your boyfriend/girlfriend or just a bunch of friends therell be some laughs and some aw man thats stupid but you will like it.
