Pralay 2012. Startling apocalypse.

2012 is a movie which will hypnotize you in it’s own way.

It begins with a series of reactions in the earth’s mantle which displaces the crust and tribulations of humanity in facing nature’s wrath. Definitely, in real, no one could be lucky enough witnessing such scenes.

Being a CG professional visualizer I’ll comment on the visuals more.

I am the most impressed with the way the volcano erupts, can’t stop myself from looking at the trailer again and again, but I still feel they could have made it more interesting through lava-the bus in the crevice was not a good idea. SFX were crackingly great. But, logically it’s not possible to escape a 30 mile outburst so quickly and efficiently, so the scenes lacked that depth. Even the pyroclastic flow would char the plane in a fraction of seconds and to everyone’s surprise, it comes out as if out of a plume of smoke.

Second impressive scene was that of the tsunami flowing to the monastry. The teaser was more than good to pull me into bookmyshow. But the scenes of the ocean striking the building were not interesting at all.

The one scene that really shook my soul was the crowds of citizens aspiring like ants to enter the previleged ship. It was really picturised to represent the plight of the masses. The internals of the Chinese station looks no more than a cheap and boring 3ds-nothing new. There is no value of India as all the plains are drowned.

In fact the whole scene from earthquake-from neighborhoods behaving like waves, car going through deflecting columns, falling bridges, train, cars off parking building, small plane speeding and the runway collapsing and aerial view of city going down in the sea were nice to watch. I think, more of these should have been shown for least 30 minutes.

Other impressive scenes were swelling ground, the scientist screaming in front of volcano, pyroclastic flow in the background, US president’s address, Russian businessman starting the car and the ship nearing Mt Everest . I applaud the efforts.

The big plane’s journey was boring except the start with volcano fumes, failed attempt to detour at Hawaii and the sedan landing. The ascent was just looking like illustrative video game simulator animation without realistic effects. The night scene of army ship was not properly lit, Rome scene was too short and nothing was shown about Africa rescue.

The story did not have any twist, turns or any kind of reactions-simply apocalypse where the rich saved there lives and after that some ordinary ones struggled. There was a lot of matter to be explored and I feel more films will come in future. In all, the trailer is more interesting .
