3 Idiots - Movie Review

Keep it Short and Simple(KISS), the lovely message for Educational system has been excellently portrayed by Rajkumari Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. We were waiting for the sequel of ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ but ‘3 Idiots’ is definitely a step ahead. It is based on Chetan Bhagat’s book, ‘Five Point Someone’. The intelligent comic style of the book and film writer and director is commendable. And that too a Hollywood style on a commercial film is worth mentioning.

Story Idea – It is a story based on true friendship. Farhan Qureshi(R. Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi(Sharman Joshi) are in search of their engineering college(modeled after IIT) room-mate, Rancho or Ranncchoddas Shamalaldas Chanchad(Aamir Khan) accompanied by Pia(Kareena Kapoor) when a geek Chatur Ramalingam(Omi Vaidya) after 10 years brings them together after being ‘made fun of’ in college(as a flashback). Rancho is actually the genius and the famous scientist, Phunsuk Wangdu. Chatur is left feeling stupid at the end of the film. What a strong bond of friendship is depicted between the ‘3 idiots’ despite the Director of the College, ViruS(Boman Irani) efforts to separate them.

The best scenes of the films are college ragging, Chatur’s speech in college and the baby delivery scène by a vacuum cleaner and simple electronic gadgets. The story idea is a sure success. The story reminds me of Tarachand Barjatya’s, ‘Dosti’ released in 1964 and the revolutionary ideas being introduced by Cabinet Minister for HR, Science & Technology, Mr. Kapil Sibal in the field of education. The story also promotes secularism(Hindu-Muslim unity) as the friends come from different religions.

The movie is without an interval with entertainment, drama, emotions, romance all in one. All the actors have done complete justice to their roles. The entire crowd in the cinema hall laughed to tears, which was a rare sight after years. It is a movie of the changing Bollywood style of film-making.
