Excellence in Cinema!

Just like TZP, 3i came in the end of the year and became the most loved film of 2009. In fact, it looks like it will be a huge hit. Also likely to get many awards this year.

As an avid moviegoer, I definitely enjoyed the film. The movie has lots of positive things and can be lauded in many departments. But first, let’s look at some cons.

The Cons:

====

Some scenes that(I felt) were misfit:

1) Wedding of Pia

2) Baby Delivery scene, (Too dramatic. Could have easily been toned down, if not removed)

Also, in the 2nd half, somewhere the movie shifts from being 3 idiots to 1 genius. i.e. Somewhere Aamir’s character gains more importance than the script of the film. This change is very slight and subtle but it definitely adds some filminess to an otherwise sensible film!

Ok. more about the the Pros:

================

Dialogues is one major attraction of this movie.

Some memorable dialogues:

=============

Bhendi 12 Rs kilo or Gobi 10 Rs kilo. Loot machi hain saare desh mein!

Rahu ki drushti aapke kundali se hat gayi hain, ab aap gadhon ko chhod insanon se prem karengi!

The teacher’s day speech

Baba Ranchoddas, meri girfriend aur wife dono Engineering hain, phir main kyun last aata hoon?

Yaar ne dil jeet liya, maine socha usko saala bana doon, phir maine apne aap ko control kiya.

Laath marata hai, Footballer banega?

Chatur, deal kaise sign karoon? Mera pen to tu le gayi!

Applause for the dialogue writers, Raju Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. Wonderful job!

Story: The story oscillates beautifully between reality and fiction, satire and tragedy. And the ending provides a good conclusion to all this. The ending is intelligently written such that it gives a shock value and yet a calming effect after this whole swinging journey. This is a rare case with Hindi Films. Many(good) Hindi films loose their grip and / or sensibility at the ending point. And good ending is another plus point of this film. So kudos to the story-writes, once again Raju Hirani and Chetan Bhagat, of course!

Music: Background music adds to the comic flavor further. And when the mood changes to sad the music varies accordingly. The music of songs is also very fresh and brings out the college atmosphere. Sonu Nigam’s rendition of All Izz Well is very nice. Because the song is not a usual song and Sonu matches his singing with Aamir’s acting completely. In all, Shantanu Moitra’s work is noticeable.

Direction: Superb! The casting is perfect. Right from Millimeter to Virus. The mixing of scenes is interesting. The choreography of songs is good. Music, Lyrics, etc., everything is just right. So, Raju Hirani manages to create success, once again!

Some memorable scenes:

=============

Introduction of Virus

Definition of a Machine

Concentrate on Mutter Paneer

Rancho tells Pia she is beautiful like her mom

Interval

How does Induction Motor Start?

All is Well, Give Me Some Sunshine, Jaane Nahi Denge Tujhe songs

Climax & Ending

One more good thing about the film is that the shooting is done entirely in India! Thereby saving money & resources! We need more such film-makers who would use their budget wisely than those others who spend hundreds of crores of rupees on foreign locations and give some pathetic dud movies!(Read: CC2C, Blue)

Performances:

=

Sharman Joshi: Power packed performance. Adds life to the character of Raju Rastogi. He just steals the show.

Aamir Khan: Aamir looks very cute and very young. His Rancho is cuter than Aakash of DCH or Sanjay Lal of JJWS. His acting is spontaneous and brings smiles.

Kareena Kapoor: Kareena looks & performs like a real doctor. Her body language, dialogue delivery, looks are very authentic. She does justice to her small role.

Omi Vaidya: Very hilarious caricature of a sincere, conformist student. Leaves an indelible mark on your mind. He is the 4th idiot!.

Boman Irani: Amazing! His Virus sticks to the mind and is as Viral as can be!

Maddy: Maddy maintains the innocence of a 20 something college student throughout the film. He looks very different from his earlier roles!

In fact, all the 3 Idiots, Rancho, Raju & Farhan look very different from their Rang De counterparts!(DJ, Sukhi & Ajay). Amazing acting by all!

Overall, the film is quite good.

Rating.4 / 5

Some thoughts that linger on:

Saari Umra Hum, Mar Mar Ke Ji Liye

Ik Pal To Ab Humein, Jeene Do, Jeene Do!

Give Me Some Sunshine, Give Me Some Rain,

Give Me Another Chance, I want to grow up once again!
