Books that moved me

It is impossible to select 5 books as the best of the best. Let me try to give you what I would consider the best of what I’ve read so far, and believe me I am a voracious reader.

No.1  One Hundred Years Of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

This is an absolutely fascinating account of the saga of the Buendia clan in the hundred years of their existence. It is alternately absurd, improbable and moving. Although its sheer size may seem a little intimidating, it is not to be missed.

No.2  Sophie’s Choice by William Styron

This is an account of how an ordinary guy in post-WW2 America meets two really quirky characters Sophie and Nathan, and how his life changes as he learns more about them. Very touching, especially at the end.

No.3  The Lord of The Rings by J.R.R.Tolkien

Almost everyone knows what this trilogy is about, thanks to the recently released movies. I still say Read the Books. Although this is a very very long set, it is unbelievably exciting.

No.4  Grapes Of Wrath by John Steinbeck

This novel set during the dust bowl period in America tells the story of the Joad family as they migrate from their parched home to what they think will be more prosperous California. As their journey progresses, life becomes more and more arduous and they lose several members along the way. This book paints a very descriptive picture of drought and famine in early America. Not to be missed.

No.5  The Guide by R.K.Narayan

Watching this movie is not enough. The book tells a very funny story of a man and his preoccupation for a captivating dancer called Rosie. I give it several thumbs up.
