Tell us 50 ....... then give us 50!

A unique and effective title involving the use of numerical characters has to be a nice round or popular number. Like numbers such as 1 million, 1000, 500, 250, 100, 50, are numbers that are cool. Numbers such as 63, 212, 431 are numbers that people will say ’’ugh’’ or ’’how did they get such a number?!’’

So here we have a site that is called 50 megs? Good enough. A round number, effectively gets a message out the site visitor that there are 50 megs of something on the site, or 50 megs available or whichever.

What is 50 Megs

Basically, 50 megs is a website that allows you to have a website hosted by them. The site will give you a certain amount of things for free, at no cost and you can run a beautiful website.

The downside to it is that you can only get 12 MB of space for the entire website. Now when I visit a site that wants to host my website, I expect all charges to be paid for and by the company.

Here are the details :

For free, you get 12MB of personal web space, a mere 256K per file upload which is small because you may want to include a .wav file that is around 500k and can’t unless you dish out some money. As well the bandwith is only 50MB for visitors to enter.

Now if the site is called 50megs.com, you’d think that you would get 50 megs for free. I wanted to sign up but unregistered after learning about this.

For 50 Megs, you have to pay $5.95 and you will be allowed file uploads of 5MB’s at a time. Included with the offer are incentives such as free counters, guestbooks, stats, email forwarding ... basically the works but not including a search submission.

There are other packages that go up to 500 megs but you simply have to pay up to $14.95 for the company to pay for your usage. I think if you were going to tell consumers that you are offering 50 megs, but only gave customers 12 megs for free, you might as well just rename the site or had done it in the beginning, calling it 500MEGS.com.

Along with everything, you get one of the most undesirable web domains. I personally would never want to have a webpage with a domain with numbers. It’s so unprofessional .. even for a Britney Spears fun site.

Overall Thoughts ...

I like the idea of a website wanting to host your site, but the fees aren’t worth it for a personal website. Even if you are a company, it would seem unprofessional to have a domain of 50megs.com. Either way, if they remove the charges I will join them for sure. If not, then I guess they have lost a potential customers. Geez, why not just get money from advertisers on your site, its easier!
