Toyboy's flop

QUESTION - what is Ashton Kutcher really famous for? Could it be as the wise-cracking prankster in MTV’s Punk’d? Maybe as the nerdy but loveable Mike Kelso in TV filler That 70’s Show? Or perhaps it’s his real-life role as the jammy sod currently performing as Bruce Willis’s stand-in at Demi Moore’s beach house? Not an easy one I know, but whatever the answer you have to admire the lad’s energy. Well, here you see him muster up enough strength to return to his day job, starring in Brit director Nigel Cole’s new romantic comedy. Well if you think he has left behind his nerdy guy days, you are way off target, because it is exactly how he portrays himself in this turkey of a movie This tale of how opposites attract is not very attractively billed as When Harry Met Sally for the MTV generation. The film starts with a bang when geeky Oliver (Kutcher) and rock chick Emily (Amanda Peet) sign up for the mile-high club on a plane trip from LA to New York. On reaching the Big Apple they go their seperate ways only to continually cross paths for the next seven years. Boyfriends, girlfriends and careers come and go but it seems they are destined to be together. But ’’will they, won’t they’’ quickly turns to ’’why can’t they get a bloody move on’’ as each chance meeting becomes more contrived. How many failed can you have in one movie?! Despite this, the film still manages to produce a laughably predictably ending. As ’’been there, done it, got the T-shirt’’ movies go this is a doozy, Kuthcer and Peet don’t have the comic talents or screen chemistry of When Harry’s Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan to deliver enough laughs to keep the film on track. I suspect if Kutcher wants to be taken seriously as an actor then he’s oing to need funnier, more original scripts in future...but, hey, with Deemi waiting at home, I doubt he’s actually that bothered.
