I had been waiting for this movie ever since I saw the first promo. And after waiting fro two long months, I finally got to see this movie. not to mention I saw the fist morning show(at 9 am on Firday) along with some alike Madhuri fans.
To begin with the story- very new, musical and interesting. You may know the story but the way it is presented, is what decides if the movie is worth watchin or not!
The plot- Diya(madhuri) is a choreograher/dancer who is now staying in NY. She returns to India only to know that her Guru is no more. She wants to fulfil her Guru’s dream of reprising the art of dance and drama in the minds of the people of Shamli, her home town. People did not support her in the beginning for the way she had left Shamli marrying an American and running away from home, while performing in a show at Ajanta, the place, the theater where she learnt dancing and acting.
She comes across Raja Sahab, the MP of Shamli(Akshay Khanna) who puts a challenge of presenting a drama with the people of Shamli and if she succeeds, he shall not demolish Ajanta, where a project of constructing a mall was in consideration. Madhuri has to fulfill this herculian task in two months. She takes the help of the local politician(trying to become MP), who supports her by providing the Manjnu(Kunal Kapoor) for her play and propaganding the show. Anokhi( Konkana Sen), finally gets a role of Laila after trying hard. must say, she has played this role very brilliantly with her funny acts and movements. The role for laila’s brother is played by jugal hansgaj, a good comeback for him as well. The husband of Laila played by Ranveer Shorey( best as usual), who happened to love Diya and was supposed to marry her when she ran away, also comes to support in this cause.
The twist- iqbal Khan playing the role of a businessman and husband of Diya’s childhood friend(Divya Dutta), succeeds in taking away the support of the politician from madhuri and tries to maipulate her name with his wife’s support. With all the opposition but the support of her actors and then finally her friend to her side, Diya succeeds in bringing the people to Ajanta to watch the show.
I must mention here, that the play displayed was a real treat! the soul of the movie. I must congratulate the writer and the choreographer in using the potential of the story an the actors to its best and giving them steps according to thier capabilities taking into consideration that it is a musical play.hats off to Vaibhavi Merchant.
The Laila-Majnu play with Madhuri’s performance has come up in a very nice way. Konkana, Kunal and Ranveer have performed briliantly.And not to forget Vinay Pathak with his comic, playing the role of a govt officer, trying to convince madhuri to take him in her play by putting forward his written application(?), in an effort to prove his wife that he is not the most boring husband in the world!
Also would take this opportunity in complementing the music director for giving such wonderful songs. some very sensous, some peppy dance numbers. in all a very good music . worth listening and cherishing. keep it up!
