My friend, who had watched this movie, told me the following points, 1. it is not a revolutionary movie or, one you would die to watch.2. 1st half seems to be fine and the second half was boring.3. the language that chola refugees speak was almost impossible to understand. Now, It was my turn, I went in with an open mindset coz my tastes differ, I sometimes love certain movies that he (my friend) feels boring.
To me it started off as a poor man’s mummy (Hollywood movie). But when parthiban (Chola refugee king) turns up, I felt it was really amazing. I have to applaud the amount of effort that selvaraghavan would have put to get the ancient tamil language in place.
We are used to watching movies portraying mideval era, but we never even knew that OUR LANGUAGE was so different. KUDOS to SELVA. It was a great learning experience for me. James cameroon, in a discussion, revealed that - Avatar ( a much celebrated Hollywood movie) had a story inspired by real life incident. say- the extinction of some indigenous tribes in the amazon basin. One of my friend said that this film also shows glimpses of the "situation in srilanka". and selva had admitted saying that it was the inspiration behind the creation of ayirathil orivan.
I always envy kerala film industry, who often come up with extremely different stories and approaches to movie making. I will go to the extent in saying that they are the masters when it comes to making original movies in India. This movie is one step in the right direction. The one thing that indian movie makers must understand, Please avoid using Computer graphics if you are out of budget. The biggest drawback in this movie is the computer graphics (CG). It is Horrible.There is more to CG than just bringing an object on the screen. There are color and light aspects which would make the object more lifelike. INDIAN CG makers LACK this basic sense.
Negatives.1. Cheap Computer graphics.2. Hollywood touch up.3. Sudden exhibition of magical powers.
Positives.1. Story - Hope it is original....(if not ....kindly point out the original movie from which they ve derived).2. Parthiban’s acting.3. Chola Tamil.4. Reema sen knows a bit of acting! that was a surprise.
Could have been better.1. Screen play.2. Normal Tamil dialog.2. Could have used subtitles to interpret Ancient Tamil.
