Ae Dil Hai Mushkil focuses on three characters — Alizeh(Anushka Sharma), Saba(Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Ayaan(Ranbir Kapoor) — and has unrequited love as its central theme. Although, Saba and Ayaan’s onscreen chemistry is being played up and marketed as "the angle" to watch out for in the film, ADHM is really Alizeh and Ayaan’s story.
"I just took nine days to write the film. I was in New York and while walking around the streets, I was thinking about the pain a person goes through when one-sided love happens. I have gone through that pain. The story of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil talks about this side of a love story, " Johar told the media when asked what made him return to the director’s chair after over three years.
