Having watched this recently again, it’s convinced me that this should go down as a modern classic in the Bollywood film scene. I judge a film by how long you think you have been watching it and with a running time of almost 2.5hrs you can’t tell where the time went. A fantastic storyline set in seedy background of the belly of a small slum in Mumbai and slam island ( Mandwa ) sey of its coast. It’s basically a revenge story with the main protagonist, Vijay Deenanath Cahaun , harbouring hate and bitterness for his righteous farther, Mandwas school resident head master, the fire of revenge harbouring in his every bone is the reason for his existence and the cause of his breakdown of his relationship with his mother and not forging a relationship which his younger sister due to his mum not agreeing with his route to his dads killer, the notorious Kanchaa who wants to become the new don of the Mumbai drug scene by growing cocaine on the ground he persuaded farmers of Mandwa to lease to him. For many of the actors in this film, I would say they put in a careers beat performance. Rithak Roshan is phenomenal and drives the film, the range he shows is incredible from angry man riddled with hate for what his life has become and revenge that eats him up with little chance of happiness to a loving brother wearing his emotions on his sleeve ( watch out for the song that Sonu Nigham says is his favourite) and the scene where he’s sat eating dinner with his mother where he walks out and is comforted by Priyanka Chopra, you can see the hatred is eating him up. What can you say about Sanjay Dutt, he goes against type and forgets the dashing hero look with the six pack and is cast as an overweight ugly evil looking villain daring to overshadow every other actors performance in the film, he looks truly menacing the stuff of nightmares which will stock with you for years. Rishi Kapoor is the sleazy underworld type of gangster you want to kill yourself, he play’s Rauf Lala, a monster who sells under age girls as if he is selling sweeties. Again going against type and looking like he’s never looked before, truly horrifying! Priyanka Chopra plays Rithiks girlfriend and is the debited girlfriend who has a heart of gold but a very independent woman. Her acting is effortless and brings warmth to the film. You won’t believe that this film is produced by Karan Johar, I was shocked when I discovered this but was a tribute to the original film where Amitabh Buchan played Vijay and hence not classified as a re-make. Bollywood doesnt really make films like this anymore so do yourself a favour and look this gem out. It’s defo in my top ten films that have come out of Bollywood in recent time’s.
