Just Unbearable

I went to see SJ Suryah’s ’’Ah Aah’’ when they screened it at my university. I had already seen his earlier movie ’’New’’ and I loved it. So I had good expectations from Ah Aah. I was very disappointed. In fact, I will go ahead and say that this movie was by far the worst movie I have ever seen.

The movie starts with SJ Suryah beating up a gang of guys who are behaving badly with some girls at a bus stop. From there, it goes on and on about the love between Suryah and his live-in girlfriend (played by new actress Nila). There is quite a bit of vulgarity shown between the two. It seems like Nila and Suryah are just all over each other physically. All it convinced me of was that they were in lust with each other and not love. There is a scene on the beach when Suryah is lying on Nila’s lap and she says, ’’look at the beautiful moon.’’ Our Suryah replies, ’’I see two moons.’’

Then one day, Nila decides that she is going to start a restaurant business along with another man named Kishore. Suryah does not like this at all but finally he relents. However, he is very jealous of Nila and Kishore and this gradually turns into suspicion. Nila also gets very close to Kishore and at one time while working in the restaurant, she spills sauce over herself on her chest. Kishore rubs it off with a tissue (how vulgar is this?) and Suryah sees it. They break up.

And then comes the second part of the story where Suryah’s memories haunts Nila and Nila’s memories haunt Suryah. The memories are portrayed as real people dressed in blue. Suryah is reminded of Nila when her memory dresses up sexily for him and dances. It seemed to me that all Suryah cared for was sex, which is certainly not what every guy does. This movie furthers this stupid stereotype. There is a scene when Nila’s memory is slowly undressing its top. On the other hand, it seems like Nila only cares for the emotional aspect of being with Suryah and when Suryah’s memory does that...she is reminded of Suryah. Well, in my opinion, this is another stereotype.

In the end, the memories are able to convince them both to get back together again. However, they both get into accidents and end up in the hospital right next to each other, in critical condition. The doctors have almost given up when the memories get into the bodies and they both make a miraculous recovery.

Don’t waste your time on this movie. Learn from my mistake. These are three hours I can never get back. I am very embarassed that we still make movies like this. I cannot beleive AR Rahman associated himself with this tasteless tripe.
