Soft Entertainer - A must watch...

When I first heard about this movie, around 2 months prior to its release, I started to get some interest in it. The sheer reason being the difference in the approach that Prakash Raj had taken for trailers/programmes telecasted and banners erected across Chennai (Courtesy: TV Channels/friends).

The story has a simple one liner concept behind it, ’’Love could strike you at any time... its like a bomb... ’Boom’ and you could be in love’’. The difference lies in the script and the way the cast has been handled by the director. Radhamohan has done a commendable job. Viji has supported him ably with crisp dialogues, be it a comedy sequence or a sentimental sequence. Ramesh Vinayagam has provided good music, that is pleasant to hear. Lets peep into these areas a bit more now.

The Story involves very few characters - 4 aspiring youngsters who wanna to stamp a mark in tinsel town; a college-going girl who wants to have an independent life, free from hassles of rowdism of her father and brother, a software engineer from US of A who lands in town to marry the girl selected by his father, a grocery shop owner who rents his house to the youngsters and a medical representative who supports the 4 youngsters.

Chandran, Bala, Murthi and Gopi (Prasanna, Jayaram, Bala & Kumuravel) are cast as the 4 youngsters. Ramesh is the medical representative who is a friend of these youngsters. His sister’s friend is Nandini whose father and brother are local goondas. Nandini’s father fixes her marriage with Arvind, a software engineer from USA without her consent. In a desperate attempt to stop the marriage she asks Ramesh for help, who in turn asks Chandran. Chandran enacts a small prank to Arvind saying that Nandini and himself are in deep love and that they are waiting for Chandran to make a mark in the film industry. In sequences to follow, Chandran builds up the tempo of their love and Arvind blindly believes them. The marriage between Arvind and Nandini is called off but her father gets hold of another local wineshop owner as the next groom. To avoid further problems, Arvind get Chandran and Nandini to tie knots at the registrar’s office. He also offers them his flat as a marriage gift and flies back to USA. Does Cupid strike Nandini and Chandran? Do they unite after being forced into this life? The answers to these and similar questions that arise in our minds form the other part of the script.

Prasanna as Chandran has done a good performance. His acting skills have rocketed from his first film (FIVE STAR). He has got all expressions picture perfect in this film. He is definitely a star to watch for the future and would pose a great challenge to the likes of Vijay, Vikram etc. He emotes to the right percentage at apt situations in this film, be it expressing a happy or sad emotion. He has also come good in the comedy sequences. This could be termed as the ’’turning of the corner’’ that he was waiting for so long in his career. Lets hope that the success of this character tunes his quest for conquer and wish him more luck.

Navya Nair as Nandini has also done a good performance. She is a new comer to the tamil film industry but she is a noted performer in the Malayalam industry. She has pleasing looks, lovely speaking eyes and has enacted the role with grace and elegance. In one of her interviews recently to a Tamizh weekly, she had stressed on the virtues of adopting a stance on ’’no-glamour’’ in her roles. Hope she sticks on to that and she could be the most wanted heroine for soft subjects like this.

Prakash Raj has done a good role following the one in ’Vasoolraja’. He has been a versatile actor and has done many roles ranging from a local thug to an Eunuch. This one, though a small one compared to some he has done before, definitely re-iterates the fact that comedy is also his forte.

Jayaram, Bala, Kumuravel, M S Bhaskar who form the three friends and the house owner have done a good job. The comedy sequences involving them are not great but they do tickle a smile. The death of one the friends does not add any value to the script. It could have either been avoided or used as a twist.

Radhamohan looks to be a good prospective director. With good support from the producers, he could help revive the industry which seems to have gone into the shell of fast paced action movies.

Ramesh Vinayagam’s music is definitely a plus to this movie. Its refreshing and melodious. All songs are good to hear and with apt chances he could upstage many people in the industry.

Viji has penned good dialogues that coincide with the situations. After quite a gap, the comedy dialogues do not contain any vulgarity.

Overall, this film is a good family entertainer. Its a must watch. It could start the revival of this industry from the clutches of a bad syndrome called ’Action oriented movies’.

Cheers,

Kirthi
