I maintain a flight log. I flew on Indian Airlines (IA) and its subsidiaries 147 times and many times in business class. I rank IA 23 out of the 27 airlines I flew in various countries. The service is pathetic, food is bad, staff are rude and indifferent, approach to customer service is bureaucratic, flights generally are not punctual, aircrafts are dirty, and cabin staff are indifferent to air safety whom I had to warn on 6 occasions for violating IATA safety regulations - for keeping the bins open, leaving their personal baggage on vacant seats, leaving the aircraft door open when there is no ladder etc. I think good service is an attitude and has nothing do with the financial status of an airline or nation in which it operates. The best airlines I flew are not from very rich countries. In fact we have one airline in India, which I rank among the top 5 of the 27 airlines I flew so far. Only cure to bad service is rejection when there is an alternative. It works. I suggest consumers to opt for an alternative if there is one including traveling by an overnight train– that is what I do.
