Impossibly low baggage limits; poor check-in

Multiple domestic flights on Air New Zealand. Auckland-Nelson; Christchurch-Queenstown; Queenstown-Auckland. The baggage allowance is impossibly small (20 kg total per pax; 2 bags total per pax) Although this may be workable for weekend domestic travelers, it penalizes foreign tourists who will almost always have more baggage than allowed. Given the quantity of US$ that my wife and I dropped in NZ, I feel that these limits are inappropriate. They will only make compromises to these limits when flying a partner airline connecting internationally. Furthermore, the check-in agent in Queenstown was very rude about the matter, particularly since we were travelling business class on all of the international segments. They need more competition to foster service quality. Here’s the full story:We flew Air New Zealand domestically only; so this review is about the domestic service - which was very poor. We checked in at the Auckland domestic terminal, which by no fault of the airline is also a mess. We were informed - for the first time in our trip - that our baggage (to support a 3 week trip) exceed their 20 kg/pax limits and would have to pay extra. Because we had a total of 3 domestic flights, we asked if they could give credit for the additional segments. No. So...we finally boarded the aircraft, began the t/o roll and pilot aborted. Bad engine gauge. Rather than automatically rebook us on another flight, they made us schlepp our bags back to the counter to rebook the flight. Fortunately, my wife went to the booking counter, while I sprinted to get the luggage. Good thing we did, because we got the last seats on the flight. This whole incident was absurd; I’ve never had to take responsibility for rebooking and hauling luggage when the airline is at fault. The Queenstown-Auckland segment was equally annoying. We were already anticipating having to pay $200 dollars extra for the baggage, but this time the agent was refusing to allow more than 4 bags. Finally, after insisting that the baggage had to go with his, he gave up, probably because he realized we were travelling internationally on business class for the next segment.Overall, the service on this airline is reminiscent of Soviet-style service.
