Since the day Ajit Agarkar joined Indian cricket team way back in 1998, its being said that he has the talent to become a genuine allrounder.But really talent alone is not enough for anybody to be in the Indian cricket team.It is the results that matter and when we see the results delivered by Agarkar we can very well say that he has performed consistently only once in long career so far and that is when he got five consecutive ducks(in Australia).
Consistency is the hallmark of any good player.Today if we say that Rahul Dravid is the Mr. dependable, it is because of his consistency, even though India have more talented players than him.When you look at Agarkar he is far from being called consistent performer.He plays well in one match and doesn’t perform in another 10 matches which is hardly acceptable in international cricket.
Another important characteristic of a good player is that he improves with time.Sachin Tendulkar is what he is today, only because he has improved by leaps and bounds from the time he made his debut as a 16 year old.But when you look at Agarkar, and compare him with what he was at the time of his debut you could hardly see any improvements, which is one of the main reason why he is not able to create any sort of impression in international cricket.
Every player has his strengths and weaknesses and they should play along with it.They should play within their limitations.Glenn McGrath has been so successful today because he has concentrated on line and length, which is his strength and never tried to be to express fast as Brett Lee.But Agarkar has not yet learned to play with his weaknesses.Upon some sucess , he tries to do too many things which he cannot and hence fails to make any impression, either with ball or bat.
Ajit Agakar may have talent, but if that talent is not reflected in the field consistently, then it is of no use.You may hit a 22 ball 50 , but when time comes you also have to hit a 50 ball 22 which Agarkar never did. Instead of taking Agarkar into the team, it is better to take somebody with lesser talent than him, but who could perform more consistently for India
