I recently travelled to India with my wife and came across an attraction that can only be described as a “Hidden Gem”. Travelling from my home town of Rotterdam, where the tourist attractions are typical of Europe, I was seeking something a little more exotic and stumbled across an unbelievable treasure.
For peace, culture and technological brilliance, the Swaminarayan Akshardham complex must be explored. The monument is breathtaking with intricate carvings, and the guides explained its rich historical significance superbly. There is a boat ride that provides a journey through India’s heritage and a wonderful musical fountain with stunning sound and lights.
An IMAX film illustrates the beauty of India through the eyes of a child, with some amazing facts, scenery and fantastic sound. There is also a wonderful garden devoted the hero’s of India complete with bronze statues, which is like an outdoor museum – ideal for the lovely weather!
The audio animatronics show is a great experience that provides a unique insight into India’s culture. Finally, the dazzling golden statues of Hindu God and Guru’s are amazing. If you have some small change in your wallet/purse, you can treat yourself to some exceptional food that is fresh and delicious, and take home some fabulous souvenirs from the huge souvenir shop. The only drawback is that you are not allowed to take your camera so you will not be able to take personal memories of your visit with you.
One point to note is the charming welcome from the staff and tour guides. You are greeted with folded hands, - a concept unheard of in the European area. This sets the tone for your visit.
I would recommend at least 4-5 hours to absorb the beauty of Swaminarayan Akshardham. This hidden attraction is not published in many tour guides, but an experience that you cannot refuse
