Nice and kewl

Alaipayuthey A super combo of sensitivity mingled with practicality and it is all dealt with such an ease to appease. The movies was released in apr 2000 and believe me, till today it has been one of my favorite regional picks. Ace filmmaker, director Mani Ratnam was sure at his directorial best when he delivered this movie. The cinematography, photography, dialogues all add to one appreciable bundle. A special mention of the tantalizing music. (Ohhh!!!) A simply outstanding music score by the Mozart of Madras A R Rahman.

Cast: R Madhavan, Shalini

The movie: The fact that it is very easy to leave home, getting carried away by juvenile/infantile ‘love’ and the Herculean task thereafter to support each other mentally, financially, is portrayed very very well. As time elapses, the passion cools everything is not really as rosy as it used to be and the way in which the couple handle the situation. A relationship is fun until you get into a commitment, from then on it is work.(reader discretion welcome…this is just what the movie says) Love- the way we see it, the way it is, the way it should be, that’s what the movie is all about.

the plot karthik(maddy) is a typical brat. Cosseted and spoilt to the hilt. His busy schedule includes zooming the streets on his bike with pals, fagging, partying and basically nothing serious or fruitful. He happens to spot this one girl (shakti) whom he can’t get out of his mind at a wedding first and then in a crowded local train (imagine the carrots he must have consumed from childhood to have that kinda eyesight!). The movie, as is expected, then moves on with him wooing her and pursuing the one thing he is serious about now-her. The appreciative part here is his tact. His approach to her and the way she handles it. It is so out of the ordinary. No clichés or overused phrases.

The innocent yet adorable way of handling the whole proposal scene is very nice. The two of them face parental opposition, elope from home and get married. They and are stupid enough to go back to their respective homes with the foolish security in mind that they are wed and that nothing can go wrong. All, until the parents uncover the truth and kick them out of the house. So the two of them set out to make a living in a shack (not really one but kinda) well incidentally, she is a doctor and he is an engineer. (So they have some nice duets to sing with stethoscopes ) The movie then encounters some grave tragedies and their marriage is on the rocks. To top it all, they have nowhere to go as they are out of home. It all culminates in a really nice accident.(!) well karthik just about loses all hope of getting his wifey back when he is confronted with a special appearance love story, that of Arvind Swamy and Khushboo (renowned actors down south). He realizes the power of love and precisely that is what retrieves back shakti (poor docs are never accredited in movies!)

performancemadhavan is a rare combination of looks and talent in a guy.(considering this category is sparse these days!hee hee!jk!) he delivers his role the fullest satisfaction. Shalini is a very ordinary looking girl next door and is at her best as well.

Well well, the not so nice parts: Obviously the end has to have some inexplicable, ineffable, unspoken thingy so you can call it anything from ‘faith’ to ‘love’ and ‘luck’ to ‘prayers’. After watching so many many Hindi and regional movies, you begin to accept it as an integral part of filmmaking.

music fabulous, fantastic, fantabulous, superb, outstanding and simply awesome. That is the gr8 A R Rahman. tunes are really catchy and melodious. There are 3 thoroughly romantic numbers, one on a folk style and one pop dance number and one immensely painful slow number. Lyrics are very deep and enthralling. This is surely one of Rahman’s remarkable compositions that are sure to stand the testimony of time. it has this inherit freshness in it. Each time you listen, it is pleasing and enjoyable. Overall it is a very nice, entertaining movie. It made madhavan an overnight star(like hritik afterKNPH). All of you who haven’t watched it should go check it out. With its slight flaws, I still did like the movie, what abt u?
