Watch this work of art and laugh your head off...This has to be one of the funniest yet classy plays, one has seen in the recent past.
Classy, because there is none of the slapstick humour that tears at the insides of your brain after a brief exposure of more than a couple of minutes. Another great point in its favour is that there are no double meaning dialogues at all....I mean it is one of the easiest things in the world to roll your eyes, give a sly snigger and a wink, and mouth the most stupid trash (hinting at various body parts engaged in unmentionable acrobatic feats and the LIKE..), and generate a good laugh. But, hey none of that stuff here.
And funny because this play is highly situational in nature. The actors display such impeccable timing that after a point in time you seriously begin to question, whether they are actually acting. It all seems so real....
Now to get to the actual plot.. Fear not, I will not be revealing the story. But in short..there are these three best friends staying together, each one has a peculiar physical disability. One is Blind, the other is Deaf and the third is Dumb...
Now this entire play revolves around this beautiful woman who enters their lives and predictably unleashes mayhem... All three of them are besotted and try desperately to win
her affections (attentions they manage without any effort considering the MAD things they do...hoo boy)
But... (and herein lies the CRUX), none of the three want her to know that they are suffering from a physical disability of any sort.... Wow.. The way they cajole, threaten and orchestrate each others performance around the lady of their dreams is a something of a visual symphony...
I mean you have the Deaf guy answering a phone, the blind guy describing the surroundings and the dumb guy conveying his thoughts to her, all with the help of his 2 other friends... oof.Regarding who gets her, I think I will refrain from mentioning that..watch the play and find out for yourselves.. :-))
Now unfortunately I saw this play a while back and thus do not remember any of the names of the chief protagonists.... But the director is Feroz Khan (No...not the Khan of Laila Oh Laila fame), but the much acclaimed director of other fantastic plays like Saalgirah (Anupam and Kiron Kher) and Tumhaari Amrita (Shabana Azmi and Farooq Sheikh).. BTW I would highly recommend these plays also (But thats another story). Tell me if you want me to review those plays also, each one is a true work of art.
This play was first released in Marathi and later adapted to Hindi. It has been playing for the last 7-8 years or so and has been running to full houses throughout. It has been one of Feroz Khans earliest successes and considering the notoriously short attention spans displayed by todays fickle minded general public, this remains one of his biggest all-time hits.
Please do go and watch this play, if it comes near you... Trust me, you will be in splits..
Happy viewing and Cheers
