THE UMBILICAL CORD OF INDIA

There would hardly be a man or a woman who has not read an Amar Chitra Katha in their life.

The place where I lived as a child, had few families and even lesser children of my age. Books were my constant companion and Amar Chitra Katha was my favorite Indian magazine. It would come pretty cheap, atleast Baba could afford it and my imaginations took wings, crossing mountains and enchanted palaces and mystical places of beauty as I immersed myself into folklores, historical characters, mythological characters and rakshashas.

Every page brought out a delightful anticipation of what was to happen in the next page, be it the sacrifice of Panna for her young prince or mythological stories of demons carrying away princeses.

I personally feel that each child should be given a adaily diet of Amar Chitra Katha, instead of Pokemons. The stories bind us ’to the clay of our ancient culture’. An Amar Chitra Katha is not just a story, but a powerhouse of learning and now that it is available in all regional languages, everybody should read it. I still do!
