This product is genuine. 3G is more for convenience of amazon than yourself. After searching through various options(the best is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_readers) I very hesitatingly tried out amazon since dont like to give out my card num. Was surprised by the simplicity and smoothness of the purchase process. I bought the Wifi one and also bought a lighted cover worth USD60. Costed me about Rs.13K with cover, shipping and duty. Note that 3G connection seems to be built-in and free even in India. Didnt buy that because somebody has to pay for everything, and mostly it is going to be me. Amazon charges USD2 extra for downloads(even for free novels) on its site for outsiders - so there they recover it. Anyway I didnt expect to browse the net and didnt want to take risk of extra 50 bucks(Rs.2500 in India). AFAIK all out-of-copyright books are free on the net and you can get them from some site or the other. The Buying Process The buying process is simple. You create an account on amazon, give your address and card number, and select what to buy. Amazon charges USD22 for shipping and USD65 as the customs duty. This is a big thing as all headaches of customs clearance etc are taken care and you get a legal duty paid product right at your house. The first few days nothing happens and you can cancel or modify the order also. You can log in anytime and see the status of you order online-it is being prepared, shipped etc. Delivery date promised was between 14 to 21 days. Item landed by DHL on 11th day after placing order. Packaging was excellent. No freebies- Doesnt come with adapter, only a USB cable. No free books- only two dictionaries are present inside. This is not at all a shortcoming as you will see later. After the PurchaseThe screen is so realistically like paper that it looked like laser printed label stuck on the screen for protection when it came. I almost touched the screen to take it out. There is no visible thickness of glass on the display. There is no feeling of blockiness in the fonts like an LCD screen. Even the smallest letters are well rounded. So there is no, repeat no eyestrain. Secondly, there is no reflection. You can check it against bright sunlight from the edge. Another big advantage is that you can change the font size instantly, and it remembers this for each of the books. The number of fonts, about 8, cater to tiniest for the healthy and young, to the mega size for the nearly blind. The Kindle 3 accepts .mobi and .pdf formats natively as I tried. Other formats like .html and .doc need to be converted by sending files by mail to your kindle account and then amazon mails them back to you directly on 3G(charged!). There is no need to take so much trouble and expense. Calibre and Mobireader are two ebook management programs available freely on the web which will convert as well as maintain your library of books on your PC. Calibre is the more powerful and better converter. Do a google search if you want it. Mobi format is what you will normally read. Kindle is not really meant to be a pdf reader with only grey shades screen. The best parts of kindle are what its designers seem to have learnt from apple products. Do very few things. Do the main job VERY well. Focus on usability rather than hundred features. Keep the menus simple. Have very few choices in menus. This is what I have learnt AFTER buying most do-all products(read cellphones) which finally dont do anything properly. The menu is only one and has just 4 choices. Remaining operations are intuitive using dedicated Home and Back keys. The small touches are evident during actual use. It remembers location on each book where you left off so you really dont have to book mark anything or hunt through pages. The second and most useful thing is instant dictionary lookup. Just go to the word and the dictionary meaning pops up at the bottom or top. You should research.
