Full Name : Amitabh Bachchan

Date Of Birth : 11 October 1942

Amitabh Bachchan? The man is simply a phenomenon. The mere mention of his name is enough to attract his fans.

For the last three decades of the 20th Century and continuing into the 21st, he has reigned supreme on India’s silver screen and in the process, redefined standards of excellence in acting and professionalism. As one of the most recognized faces in India, his movies are watched by millions of people in India and across the world.

He has also done the playback singing in many of his films. During the shooting of the movie Coolie (1983), he injured himself falling awkwardly during a stunt scene in one of his trademark fighting scenes. Thousands of hysterical fans camped outside the St. Philomena Hospital while he was hospitalized. Many prayed for Amitabh’s recovery. He also received many get-well-soon cards. He soon recovered and completed the movieThe film Coolie, was shown at a major international film festival, The Pesaro Fest in Rome during 1982.

Who is Amitabh Bachchan? Where does he come from? What is it about him that has captivated millions of cinemagoers all over the World?

Amitabh Bachchan is an Indian actor. The elder of the two sons of Harishvansh Rai Bachchan, an acclaimed Hindi poet, and the socialite Teji Bachchan. He hails from Allahabad, India, which is a city in Northern India in the Uttar Pradesh state.

Amitabh went to Sherwood College, a boarding school in the hill-station town of Nainital. At Delhi University, he earned an Arts degree. He later went to Bombay, where he struggled initially to get roles. Amitabh was not deterred by his early setbacks.

He made his first appearance on the Big Screen in the movie Saat Hindustani, which did not do particularly well at the box office. Nonetheless, he persevered, and he can be said to have arrived in the Hindi film world with the films Zanjeer and Deewar .

He married Jaya Bhaduri, herself one of the most successful and accomplished actresses in the Hindi cinema. Amitabh and Jaya have two children, Shweta and Abhishek. Abhishek Bachchan has also ventured into Hindi cinema recently.

Altogether, Amitabh Bachhan has appeared in over 90 films, many of them, particularly those from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, resounding successes. He has starred in many a blockuster..

In the mid-1980’s, he retired from the film world and tried his hand at politics. Due to his enormous popularity, not to mention the close association with the Gandhi family, he was elected to parliament with a huge majority from his home city of Allahabad. But his stint in politics did not last long and he was implicated in some scandals. He gave up his seat in parliament, vowing never to be involved in politics again. He then went back to the movies.

Since the mid-1990’s, Amitabh has returned to the commercial cinema, but he has not had the record smashing impact on the box office as he had done in the past. However, he continues to have an extraordinary public presence in India.

It was Satyajit Ray, among others, who found that Amitabh’s deep and rich voice, which leaves a lasting impression upon listeners, makes for excellent narration. Amitabh had provided narration for numerous films and cultural programs.
