I am probably the only one to ever write about amjad khan, as I requested this topic, the reason for me to write about him is because of nice performances, in old movies, the one movies has to be sholay, who doesn’t know the performance of gabbar singh in sholay.
Amjad khan was born on 12 november 1940 and died on 27 july in 1992, he died mostly because of overweight problem, he had and had an heart attack. If you don’t know who amjad khan he is probably the most popular villain of hindi cinema. He is from hyderabad, his first movie was as a child artist called abb dili door nahin. In 1972 he married sheila khan. He also has a son name shadab khan, who acted in a couple films which flopped very badly, a daughter nameahlam khan and a younger son name seemab khan. amjad khan is the son of actor jayant, that’s why probably got in the movies.
He made his debut in the film called hindustan ki kasam in 1973 a war movie starring raj kumar, the movie didn’t do that much for amjad khan. Then ramesh sippy the director of sholay and g.p sippy producer of sholay took amjad khan in the film sholay, in which amjad khan played gabbar singh the film did wonders for each of the starcast, sanjeev kumar plays thakur, amitabh plays jai and dharmendra plays veeru, even small roles of people like mausi is rememberd, but this is one film where the villain is remembered till today . The first choice for playing gabbar singh was danny denzongpa, but danny refused then the role went to amjad khan who was the second choice.
After sholay there was no turning back, as he become one of the top villains on hindi cinema of that time, next film was charas starring dharmendra, hema malini, another hit and a another good performance. One of my favorite roles of him was in the suspense thriller movie called inkar starring vinod khanna, the movie was really well made and amjad khan played a kidnapper in the film, he was pretty scary in the film.
Parvarish, hum kisi se kum nahin, khoon ki pukar, suhaag, mr natwarlal, bombay 405 miles were all pretty much hit movies and he plays villain in all of these films. My second favorite role of him when he played a pathan in the film mukkadar ka sikander, his performance was as good as amitabh bachnan’s, the dialogues like apun apne aap jail mein aaayega inspector pehle apun is sikander ko khalas karke aayega. This performance was an awardworth performance for either the supporting actor or the villain award.
Then somehow he got tired of playing villain roles and went onto do meaningful roles of a father or relatives in the films, Laawaris of amitabh bachnan was another film he gave a tremendous performance in which plays amitabh’s father he gives a cooldown performance which really suited him. He also won a best supporting actor award for the movie called dada starring vinod mehra in the lead, In the 70’s or the early 80’s they never had the awards for villains, otherwise the award for villain for sholay and mukkadar ka sikander was a must for amjad khan.
In the film qurbani directed by firoz khan he gives his third best performance, as the pan chewing police officer, people loved his performance, the movie was a big hit as it introduced news cars and james bond film like stunts. He has also won a best comedian award for the film maa kasam, starring mithun.
Along the way he also kept doing more villain roles in films like ram balram, samrat, himmat wala, satte pe satta, teesri aankh, naseeb in which most were hit movies. One role of him that was awarworthy was the playing vakil bhaiya in the film chameli ki shadi supporting anil all the way along amjad khan was really funny in the film. Another good performance was in the film called love starring salman khan, he gives a really good supporting actor performance he plays guruji to salman khan, but the movie flopped I think. His last film was called hukamnama starring shatrughan sinha.
Along from acting in films he also directed two films called aamir aadmi gareeb aadmi the film was a big flop and his second directed film was called chor police, starring shashi kapoor and shatrughan sinha that film didn’t do quite well also.
AS to us he will always remain gabbar singh the villain of bollywood, my favorite lin of him is from the film sholay Bahut yaarana lagta hai .
