As Good as It Promises to Be

George Orwell is one of the most celebrated writers in the world -- and quite rightly so. As my knowledge about him grew more profound, I was attracted to read two of his best works: Animal Farm and 1984; though I never got the pleasure to read the latter.

While reading reviews of various books on Mouthshut.com, I came across a few

books whose reviews were astonishing. These books are: Pride and Prejudice (which

is not my cup of tea), Disgrace (Good), Anna Karenina and Animal Farm. All these books were rate 5 out of 5, and at the same time, the lowest rating was either 3 or 4. This means that these are among the only books that are liked by each and everyone.

Many classics have disappointed me and hence I was reluctant to read this one

also. But, quite contrary to all my expectations, this book has turned out to

be a masterpiece.

I am not interested in telling the story-line; I will focus on the literary

aspects.

The main reason why this books works is: It is simple and Truthful.

It does not

have any ups-downs, tragedies . . . -- which are the main ingredients of many

novels.

The plot of this book is very simple and smooth. This book delights you; and at

the same time, delivers a message also.

George Orwell -- or should I say ’Eric Blair’-- was a strong protestant of totalitarianism;

and this fact is truly visible in this work of his.

I am now looking forward to

read 1984, but unfortunately this doesn’t seem likely possible. I am not able

to find it anywhere. Anyways, I liked Animal Farm, and after reading it, I have

added the name of one more author to my already-very-short list of favourite

authors.

Read it. You will be enlightened; sort of.
