Hi everybody this is review of album which was hyped as the best of the year .For first time Shankar has done a movie without Rahman.So naturally expectations were high to find if it was shankar who is responsible for all the great tunes composed by Rahman or if it was Shankar who used Rahman well by giving him his time to create music.The verdict is out with the release of Anniyan for which Harris spent almost a year without composing for any other movie.First we will have alook at the songs.
The song ’Kadhal Yaanai..’ is the first song in cassette and Shankar has tried to do Shakalaka baby type of song and has succeeded to some extent in that.The main problem with this song is it sounds so familiar and we have heard the same in many songs.No fresh sounds used by Harris which Rahman does so regularly .Another song intended to be peppy is ’Kannum Kannum Nokia...’ is the worst song of album .The only hope for this song is picturaisation.HOpe Shankar does some magic in that.
The song ’Kumari..’ is the pick of album.Though there is nothing so fresh in composition, Harris has kept the tune simple (Which he missed in many of the songs).Another plus point is Shanker Mahadevan.He should be given half the credit for this song at the least.great rendition by him.’Iyengar Veetu Alage..’ is another song which is melodius but is not likely to have much of mass appeal.I feel Shankar has tried to recreate the ’’Ennavale ’’ magic from Kadhalan but the result is not upto mark.
The Gaana number which is a mandatory nowadays comes in this album as ’Randakka..’.But again the factor which is so important for these type of song is its rythm which is completely lacking .And the song loses its tempo completely aftersome 1 minute.
This album might graduate as a above average album from buyers point of view and might top charts once the movie releases thanx to more than 20 crores spent by producer.But thats not the way director Shankar’s music usally was.It usually creates a wave throughout the state. I still remember the expectation with which I went to his movies imagining how he would have picturised the songs eg..’Chikku bukku..’’, ’’Muqabla’’, ’’Akkada..’’’’Athisayam..’’, ’’Shakalaka baby and uppu karuvadu’’ and (in boys all the songs).But with Anniyan there’s nothing like that to look forward to.And to the all important doubt regarding how Rahman delivers good music for Maniratnam, Shankar , Subash Gai etc is now clear.Its not because they are with him..Its because he gets amble time with these directors.And if Shankar has thought he’s responsible for success of all the songs in his previous six movies....Sorry Shankar(Even I had a doubt ..Thanx for clearing that).
