The good old pair of Munnabhai, i.e. Sanju-Arshad is back! This time in a different movie, different role, and a different country. Though the movie is not as good as Munnabhai, it is quite entertaining.
The story of the movie: Champ (Arshad Warsi) lives in Thailand. He is an expert in making duplicate identity cards, documents, passports, licenses etc. He was in love with Rosa (Anusha Dandekar). Rosa also loved Champ very much. On their day of wedding, Champ was arrested. And that was the end of his love story! In jail, Champ met Magician Raghu Sharma (Raghuvir Yadav). Raghu had stole diamonds worth Rs 10 crores 15 years ago. He hid it under the ground near a Buddha statue. Later he got arrested. Raghu insisted Champ to release him out of the jail. If he does, Raghu would give half of the diamonds he had robbed to Champ. Champ declined, saying that he doesn’t want to do illegal work anymore. 6 months later after Champ was arrested, Champ was released from jail. He goes to meet Rosa first. But she had already got married to someone else! Disheartened, Champ now decides to release Raghu from jail in order to get hold of diamonds. By giving an expensive watch to the jailor, Champ releases Raghu from jail! Now they had to change their identities in order to avoid any problems. For this, Champ takes help of his friend, a post-mortem specialist (Ravi Baswani). He gives Champ and Raghu the identity of Anthony Gonsalves and Rehmat Khan respectively. Both Anthony and Rehmat had died and their dead bodies had come to Ravi Baswani for post-mortem. Then, two people started secretly following Champ everywhere. Champ was even attacked once. Because of this, Champ realizes that they are mistaking him for the real Anthony. So the big questions are:
Who was Anthony?
What has Anthony done that they have attacked Champ?
And will Champ get the diamonds??
Anthony Kaun Hai scores at many places. Firstly it has an excellent, twisted and interesting story. Though it is slight inspired from some Hollywood movies and also from Chor Machaye Shor, the movie is quite enjoyable. Secondly, it is directed very stylishly and can be termed as one of the stylish movie of 2006! Thirdly, it has excellent music.
The movie is a not comedy. It is bit thriller, action packed and comic. Hence, it can be stated as a ‘semi-comic’.
Arshad Warsi proves his capability. Last seen in Golmaal in a comic role, here he gets a chance to be the main protagonist. He takes full advantage of his chance and succeeds. He is going to be seen next in Lage Raho Munnabhai, as the good old Circuit, the role that led him to success!
Sanjay Dutt as Master Madan, a ruthless and contract assassin is quite entertaining. Give him any role and he would play it with quite ease. But the movie revolves around the life of Arshad Warsi, so Sanju is a supporting actor. His role can also be termed as ‘special apperance’. So this may disappoint some of his fans.
Minissha Lamba as Jia (Raghu Sharma’s daughter) does a decent job. Last seen in Coporate where she was hardly there, here she gets a platform to prove her acting. After such a good job here and in her debut movie Yahaan, she may get more roles in future. She is also present in the forthcoming movie Rocky.
Anusha Dandekar was in a special appreance and was present only in the beginning. Her performance here was better than her performance in her last movie, Viruddh. Raghuvir Yadav does a very good job. Gulshan Grover was good but he really irritates when he sings. Ravi Baswani was okay. Same for Chetan Hansraj (who plays the role of rich baddie, Lucky Sharma). Mandira Bedi was also there, but only for one second (Mandira is wife of director of this movie, Raj Kaushal).
Soumik Sen’s story is very interesting as I said before. Raj Kaushal’s direction was very stylish and perfect. If provided him with nice scripts, he could become a fantastic director.
Soumik Sen’ story coupled with Raj Kaushal’s direction makes this movie interesting.
Himesh Reshammiya’s music was brilliant. As for songs, there were some which were added unnecessarily, especially, ‘Because I Love You’ and ‘Let’s Rock’. The most likeable songs are ‘Bhangra Paale Paale’, ‘Tune Mera Chain Vain Le Liya’, ‘No Way No Way’ and ‘Ishq Kiya’.
Hemant Chaturvedi’s cinematography is excellent and breathtaking. Action was too good.
Some of the excellent scenes of the movie:
Sanjay Dutt’s entry
The scene where Champ gets arrested during his wedding
The scene where Champ and Raghu change their identities.
The climax shot on Bangkok Airport
On the whole, Anthony Kaun Hai is a very stylish movie and is worth watching once. But it may no survive for too long at the Box Office for too long because of a big blockbuster ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ releasing next week. So if you want to really watch Anthony Kaun Hai, watch it out as fast as possible!
