My second review on anything on mouthshut- and on something I am very proud to own. I bought a iMac G5 about a year and half back- after falling in love, at first sight. iMac G5 is a state of art personal computer- with a very robust and safe (safe from viruses, ActiveX blah blah) operating system. It comes bundled with a bunch of software that will allow you to go with your day to day needs. It is even better if you are in IT- as a techie ofcourse- because the Mac OSX is an OS based of Unix.
When I ordered my machine -it came with OS presinstalled with Appleworks, GarageBand, and Apple developer kit along with all other normal utilities. It came with 512 MB RAM and a 1.8Ghz processor. There is no floppy drive ( I haven’t seen a floopy disk for a year even at work) but has a slot loading Superdrive- which can be used to burn CD’s and DVD’s. iPhoto and iDVD with iMovie (Damn...all those i’s) help you connect and work with your digital Camera and DV camcoder without any software to be installed. It has 3 USB2.0 ports and 2 firewire ports with inbuilit 10/100 Ethernet and Modem.
In the past one and half years- I have been using my iMac very intensively for various activities including video editing and multilmedia- I never had any problems till date (touchwood..). I DONOT run any antivirus and am connected round the clock to internet via broadband. If you are addicted to windows- the Mac may not be a very easy to use system but if you are willing to learn or have worked on Xwindows- this is one piece of equipement you will love. There are no processes hanging or blue screen of death.
Now let me come to the cons- Cost is an inhibiting factor, support in India is not that great is what I heard- though I never needed the same. A lot of freewares that you can find for Miscllaneous tasks on Windows- You may have tough time on Mac. If you are a gamer- PC games will not work- but there are excellent Mac games.
Final comment- If you have the money this is one machine that is worth its value..
