The film Asoka is Shah Rukh Khans contribution to ersatz,
Bollywood ishstyle. Mounted on a gargantuan scale, it peters out as a run-of-the-mill historical docu-drama. The saddest part is that the ingredients were actually all there;it was the cooking that proved to be the undoing. Apparently SRK was attempting to create cinematic history. What he has however achieved is neither cinema nor history. However, the film is exceptionally good technically and the performances keep you glued. All in all, the magic, that it which makes a film hatke is sorely missing. Good for weekend timepass.
