Automatic transmissions are best in crowded cities like Bangalore, Bombay and Delhi. If you stop and start frequently or if you brake frequently, then you probably need to change gears often. Changing gears may become un-noticeable if you are used to it. But once you drive a car with automatic gears(equivalent of a Kinetic Honda - no gears), then you probably will appreciate the comfort of automatic transmission.
Obviously, world-wide, automatic transmission enabled gears are expensive than manual gear cars. I would think that in India the difference would be around Rs 50-60K.
I have driven in numerous automatic cars in US - and the auto gears are a boon in downtown New York. And I would assume they would be a life saver in KalbaDevi, Bombay or Infantry Rd, Bangalore.
