AVATAR – Movie Review (2009)

James Cameron has done it again after 12 years(TITANIC was released in 1997) though this time he takes us to an imaginary world of humans fighting the Navi tribe(A hybrid species between man and animals. Subjectively speaking with no favoritisms, the story idea, special effects, graphic, action and make-up of the artists is commendable.

The idea is old but well written. Jake(Sam Worthington), a warrior is employed, after the death of his brother, to spy on the Navi tribe so that the humans can end their civilization and rule them. Jake is promised that he would get new legs after the mission is over. Jake lands aboard Pandora(a spacecraft), a moon of the planet of Polyphemus(about 4.3 light years from earth) and lands among the Navi’s. Jake meets a female Navi, Neytiri(Zoe Saldana) who finds in him a’pure spirit’ and they become friends. Neytiri tells Jake all about the tribe and even their sacred beliefs. They fall in love. Jake spying on the Navi tribe partly destroys them realizing that he has to’Save the Navi’s’. Jake is in the impression that he can negotiate a deal between the humans and the Navi’s but he is ditched by the former. Later he returns as the Navi Avatar and saves them, in the end choosing to live with them rather than’humans’ alongside Neytiri.

The actors have done a great job. The special effects are awesome. James Cameron had to wait for years for the technology he needed for his script. The movie is full of innovative thoughts, emotions, action, and above all a visual extravaganza, which is very interesting and full of curiosity. James Cameron is definitely now’1’ of my favorite’ directors.

Sooner or later one has to wake up” - the movie title opening dialogue is thoughtful. The movie alludes the victory of Nature over Man and man befriending Nature. The movie ends with Jake narrating himself on a Video. This is appreciable. I rate the film as 4.5 out of 5.

Hollywood is surely finding a big target segment in India.
