Regional Richness

Last night my visit to the audio store turned out to be good. These days hardly we find a music album close to the regional touch. But the music of the film ‘Avunanna Kaadanna’ proves that there are still some music directors who strive to save the richness of regional music.

Cover Details:

Film: Avunanna Kaadanna

Director: Teja

Starring: Uday Kiran, Sadaf

Music: R.P.Patnaik

Lyrics: Kulasekhar

Songs Within: When I was about to hear the album for the 4th time, the following was my order of preference:

A-1: Avunanna Kaadanna…. R.P.Patnaik

This title number is the soul of the album. It is a small song, but the sweet words in the soft tune will smoothly take you into the theme. And R.P.Patnaik’s voice is just perfect.

A-4: Suvvi Suvvi Suvvalamma…. Chitra, Mallikarjun, Bhaskar

This beautiful melody reminded me of Ilaya Raja’s composition: Minneti sooridu from Bharati Raja’s ‘Seetakoka Chilaka’. Though R.P.Patnaik did not copy even a tune from it, the song has the same feel. People who like Ilaya Raja’s style of melody will surely repeat this song.

B-3: Preminchanani cheppana…. Sandeep, Usha

This is my favorite of the album, especially for the subtle rhythm that follows each interlude. The mellifluous melody that develops along the length of the song makes me visualize a wonderful duet. Sandeep and Usha sync their voices well.

B-1: Anaganaganaga…. K.K., Usha

This song conveys the sense of separation. Though it has typical parameters (similar to Gunna Maavi komma from ‘Nuvvu Nenu’), K.K.’s voice keeps one far from skipping the song.

A-3: Nelatalli Gundelo…. Shankar Mahadevan

Here start the fast numbers of the album. The tune gives the true meaning of the words which flow along. It will surely prompt a dull man dance. Shankar Mahadevan is at his energetic best.

The catchy lines: ……. Paate vinte oope raavali raa,

taalameste Konaseeme koilammai paadali raa………..

……. Moolanunna ammamma, moodu kaalla musalamma,

Paata vini rojanta chinduleyyala ……...

A-2: Gudigantala Navvutavela…. S.P.Charan, Usha

This is a typical Telugu film duet, with simple words and simpler melody. The song goes along a casual style tempting the listener to hum along. S.P.Charan and Usha make no mistakes.

B-4: Nadume uyyala…. Partha

This is a typical Teja-RP ‘mass’ number, which will surely catch the masses. The words will hold on to people who like ‘mass’ numbers. But I doubt if this song was sung by Partha (according to the cover details), because the voice and expression are to close to that of R.P.Patnaik.

B-2: Malinam kaanidi prema…. Usha

This is a sad song; but what stand out in this number are the simple lyrics (in fact, outdated lyrics) and the beautiful tune which lifts those words to the zenith of deep emotion. Usha’s rendition involves clarity and simplicity.

Recommended: There is a general talk among the Telugu cine-goers: “Just Routine” and they hold it the best reason to ignore some things. But the fact is that they enjoy the same ‘routine’ songs and films (of their favorite stars). I won’t say that this album is special or has something new; in fact, it is typical. But I would recommend it to all those who love to hear the regional richness in Telugu music.
