Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

I think that this film can definitely be classed as an old classic. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of watching it. The story is about the Maitlands, a couple who are killed in a car crash. They find themselves back at their house unable to leave. A family moves in and they decorate the place with silver hammerite (well that’s what it looks like anyway). The Maitlands try and frighten them away but because they are dead obviously they can’t be seen. One person who can see them though is the daughter, Lydia. Beetlejuice comes into it when they call his name three times in the hope that he will get rid of the new house owners, it all goes horribly wrong and the Maitlands end up being exorcised. This is a typical Tim Burton story, brilliantly told.

A very young Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton do a great job as Lydia and Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice is portrayed as a dirty old man character adding some humour into the film. Sleepy Hollow (Tim Burton again) reminds me of Beetlejuice when I watch it, don’t know why. It’s that weirdness of his I think. The soundtrack, well is nothing you would listen to normally but the scary theme music is very memorable (singing it in my head now, probably for the rest of the day). The best part of this film is when the Maitlands go over to ‘the other side’ and see other dead people. You can tell how everyone died, there is a very flat man with tyre marks over him and someone with an axe in their head! Although this film is quite dated now and the special effects are nothing compared to what you get in recent films this is still a very enjoyable film to watch. This film is usually on at Christmas, every year and even though I have the DVD I still watch it on the TV.
