Get the job you want

First of all I must talk about dressing for the interview. Make sure you are clean, body and hair, use mouth wash and carry breath mints.

The way you dress depends on what type of job you are applying for. If you are applying to work at Burger King, a car wash, or a factory or anything similar jeans and a t-shirt is fine to wear. Just make sure they are clean and have no holes or tears in them. If applying at a place that food will be served tie your hair back so they will notice that you know you need to keep your hair out of the food.

If your going for any other type job, women should wear a nice dress (not too revealing) a suit or a nice pant suit.

A man should wear a suit or at least nice slacks and a sports jacket. Don’t forget the tie.

Check yourself just before you go in to make sure your hair is still in place and so on.

Now you must walk in with confidence and in order to do that you should be well prepared. Never apply for a job that you don’t know how to do unless the ad says they will train.

Make sure you take a current and neatly typed resume. Under interests be sure to stress things that pertain to the job so think ahead on what you are applying for.

For example if you go to apply for a job as a receptionist then among your interests should be meeting new people, dealing with the public, and things of that nature.

Be sure and introduce yourself and shake hands and keep eye contact with the interviewer. Do not sit unless invited to do so.

Answer all questions you are asked the best you can and ask any that you may have. You might want to take a list with you and a pad on a clipboard and of course your own pen.

One of the questions always asked is what can you do for our company or what are your goals with the company so be prepared ahead of time to answer this and in order to do that you need to know about the company.

I am not by any means implying you should lie but there are certain things a person likes to hear in deciding to hire you, so tell them what they want to hear.

Make sure you point out that you are a hard worker, are always dependable and so on. Do not be afraid to name your best points.

I have never been turned down for any job I have applied for and I am not an overly confident person but as long as you don’t let it show is what counts.

I will usually ask if they are hiring immediately and state that I will work any hours and ask when would you like me to start? Also stressing that I can do the job.

If they tell you they want to interview more people first then thank them for their time, shake hands and tell them you will be in touch.

If you don’t hear from them call them in 2 days and if they still have not decided call in a week. This may sound like your being a pest but it also shows them you really want the job.

One time I heard about a job that I knew I wanted and I went to apply and was handed an application to fill out which I did and gave it back to the receptionist. She said they would call me for an interview. I had found out ahead of time that the managers name was Dick so I said to her I would like to see Dick today. She assumed I knew him. She asked if he would see me today and I told her he would.

He came out asking if we had an appointment and I told him we did now. This could back fire on a person with no sense of humor but I had found some one that knew him and knew that he did.

He chuckled and gave me the interview. He joked around a lot so I was brave. When he asked what I hoped to accomplish there I told him I would like his job and he laughed and said as long as I waited until he was done with it.

He then told me he would call me. I said I am here, I am qualified, I will work any hours and any position for now, when do I start and he told me to be there the next day.

Just remember they are people just like us so don’t act like a stuffed shirt but do show your intelligence and you will get the job you want.
