This review is about the course I undertook at De Montfort University, UK. I was a mature student when a re-entered full time education.
I have recently completed a modular degree at this University based at the Bedford Campus and would recommend it. I graduated in Dance and Drama in Contemporary Culture with Sports Studies, gaining a BA (HONS) in June 2000 as a mature student. It is an enjoyable course, combining academic study with physical performance.
The lectures are usually around two-three hour long and not over crowded except for core modules. In both the first and second years a Core module must be undertaken and passed in order to move into the next year. The third year’s core subject is a specialist project, a 10, 000-word dissertation. Most of the tutors and lecturers are approachable and will assist with any problems. Extensions are granted for assignments and the special needs unit is available through the student support agency.
I entered the course as a second year, at the grand old age of thirty-two years old. For some it may seem like an advantage, but believe me it is not. As well as the new working patterns, no help is given in using the Library, CD-ROM, book Dance Spaces (rooms) and also the layout of the two campus sites. When you ask questions, you had to always explain that you were a direct second year entrant. It is not much fun, believe me! At times I just wanted to crawl into a hole and hide.
The course maps out the development of dance from its origins to the present day. Choreography styles are introduced and explored. Technique is taught along with dance reconstruction. Academically, the course encourages personal learning combined with aesthetics and cultural developments within society and its effect on the theatre. Trips are made to various events and self-development is practically encouraged.
Fitness is required to undertake this course and have good background knowledge of dance is a must. It is to your advantage to have studied some contemporary dance techniques. If you are interested in dance in any way this course is one to consider!
