March12, 1993 was a friday. A ’’Black Friday’’ not only in Mumbai’s chapter
but also in the history of India. Now Jhamu Sughand and Mid Day
Multimedia bring to you a film based on the chronology of events that led to the devastating serial blasts and also the aftermath thereafter.
Writen
and directed by Anurag Kashyap of Satya, Paanch and Yuva fame, the film
starts off with one of the accomplices of the gang being held up for
interrogation at Nav Pada police station. That accomplice confesses
that there is a conspiracy underway to bomb major places in Mumbai,
which is dismissed by the police officials as rubbish. Three days later
the dastardly act takes place and the financial capital of India is
torn apart by way of 12 explosions back-to-back.
The movie then
traces the series of investigations and arrests done by Mumbai Police
under the case in-charge Rakesh Maria (Kay Kay Menon). The
investigations not only reveal the involvement of the Dubai based
underworld and ISI, but also brings to focus the reason behind such
heinous act (Dec 1992 and Jan 1993 riots) and one man’s decision to
take a revenge against an entire community on the behalf of another.
The
movie is flawless in terms of script writing, research and direction.
The script is written like a documentary and the movie also unfolds in
an episodic fashion. The cinematography is fantastic taking you right
into the scheme of things. The editing is crisp and the movie has just
the perfect kind of pace that it needed. Also the film boasts of
superlative performances from all the cast members like Kay Kay Menon,
Aditya Srivastava, Pawan Malhotra and the rest. Indian Ocean have given
an emotionally arresting soundtrack.
All in all - A masterstroke indeed!
