The American Dream

’’Blow’’ is probably the most important film about drugs since ’’Dazed and Confused.’’ It is a much more dark and less humorous film than ’’Dazed’’ which was about pot and ’’Blow’’ is about cocaine. Based on a true story, the film revolves around George Jung, (Johnny Depp). After growing up watching his father, Fred (RAY LIOTTA) not get anywhere after working hard all of his life and dealing with his mother, Ermine (RACHEL GRIFFITHS), often walking out on them, George Jung (JOHNNY DEPP) and his best friend Tuna (ETHAN SUPLEE) decide to move from their Massachusetts hometown to sunny California. In California they meet a young woman, Barbara (FRANKA POTENTE), and her friends who introduce them to the world of pot smoking. That eventually leads to them meeting Derek Foreal (PAUL REUBENS), a local dealer, when they decide to start selling pot themselves. They eventually become quite successful when another hometown friend, Kevin Dulli (MAX PERLICH), visits and tells them they could make a fortune selling to the east coast colleges.

With Barbara, a stewardess, transporting the pot and Kevin dealing it back east, George and Tuna’s business really takes off, especially when they start transporting the drugs directly from Mexico. Busted and in prison George meets Diego Delgado (JORDI MOLLA), who puts him onto the world of cocaine trafficking. Jung claims in ’’Blow’’ that he brought in 85% of the coke that came to America in the late 70’s and early 80’s. There is no reason to doubt him But ’’Blow’’ is not really about cocaine or Jung.

’’Blow’’ is about one man’s inability to grasp the true beauty of life. ’’Blow’’ is about the manipulation of greed into a supposed proverbial ’’American Dream.’’ Always looking for easy money, Jung is never worried about his health or the health of others. No judgments are ever made about right or wrong in the film It is the story of a man who really did not get the true meaning of life until it was far, far too late and how that inability to grasp the meaning of life cost him his own existence. The film is beautiful and interesting. The story is so engrossing that no dialogue is really necessary to clarify what is being seen. .
