At a special event today BMW revealed much more information about the petrol-electric-hybrid i8 sports coupe and the plug-in battery-electric i3 city car. The BMW i3 has a 125 kW / 250 Nm ( 170 hp / 184 lbft) electric motor which delivers a 0-100 kph ( 0-62 mph) time of 7.9 seconds and a 150 kph ( 93 mph) top speed. Although BMW dont specify the battery size they do state an everyday range of 160 km ( 100 miles) or FTP72 cycle range of 225 km ( 140 miles) and charge times of 6 hours for 100% ( or 1 hour to 80% ). The hybrid i8 has a notably smaller electric motor delivering 96 kW / 250 Nm ( 128 hp / 184 lbft) to the front axle as well as a 1.5L three-cylinder rear mounted petrol engine which adds 164 kW / 300 Nm ( 220 hp / 221 lbft) to the rear axle. The i8 has a battery-only range of just 35 km ( 20 miles) and can be recharged in two hours. Inside weve got videos of both cars as well as a huge gallery of design images and photos.
