Badge, and consequently it proved a popular choice, despite being deeply flawed.
However, when it started developing this second-generation model, BMW knew it could ill-afford to launch another car as cramped, noisy and disappointing to drive as that first X1, not least because of the sheer number of alternatives that have gone on sale in recent years.
Direct rivals include the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA, but the X1 also faces competition from the smaller Audi Q2 and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
Fortunately, the latest X1 is as good as the original was bad, a transformation that has largely been achieved by basing it on the 2 Series Active Tourer, which was BMW’s first ever MPV.
The X1 is available with a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine and a range of 2.0-litre diesels, plus buyers can choose between front and four-wheel drive.
