Many Indian immigrants to Canada seem oblivious to the fact that their Canadian born children are not Indian in the strict sense of the word. First and foremost, they are Canadians with an Indian heritage. When parents forget this, their attempts to instill Indian values and tastes in their children often backfire or have unintended results.
I am a student of India and am married to a former Indian national. We have never imposed Indian values upon our Canadian born son. Rather, we have lived them and let him choose for himself. As a consequence, he has a self-cultivated love of India and refers to it as the ’’Mother Country’’ with great pride. When he finishes his doctorate, he hopes to start some sort of joint-venture business in India which will benefit the country.
