Bridget Jone’s Diary, probably the biggest film this year (so far!) and a film that I wasn’t really all that interested in seeing, but my girlfriend did (always the way isn’t it fellas!). So, I went to see it with my girlfriend earlier this week and must say that even though I thought I wasn’t going to like it, I was very impressed!
Bridget Jone’s Diary is all about Bridget (hey you would never had guessed that if I hadn’t told you!). Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is a 32 year old single women, has been single all her life and is looking for Mr Right but doesn’t actually think he will ever come along. She visits her Mum and Dad’s house every year and every year her mum introduces her to some male who she thins would suit her daughter, but as is the case every year, things never go nowhere and this year it’s no different, or so she thinks! She is introduced to Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) who is standing there wearing a knitted jumper with a picture of a reindeer on the front! As she is walking up behind him, she actually thinks that her mum has got it right this year, but after she has seen the jumper, she realises she hasn’t! So that’s that.
Back to work she goes after the New Years Celebrations and she starts to like her Boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) who is sending her e-mails about her skirt! So, everyday she comes into work with a shorter skirt on and a more revealing top! She keeps getting the e-mails and replying to them until they are stuck in an elevator together and Daniel asks her to have a drink with him that evening. She plays hard to get and says she is doing something which she’s not, but she’s just trying to treat him mean and keep him keen! Eventually they do go out with each other, have a great time and end up in bed together. The sex is great, Daniel is great, Bridget can’t believe what’s going on. Things progress and they start a relationship, the only thing is, Daniel doesn’t like commitment!
So, things are going ok, the sex is great and all that but then Bridget realises that Daniel and Mark know each other as they arrive at the same parties and really can’t stand each other. Daniel tells Bridget that Mark stole his fiancé off him years back but it ends up that Daniel stole Mark’s fiancé off him! This all starts to unfold as Bridget finds Daniel bedding another girl.
Anyway, it’s swings and roundabouts as to which guy she goes with and who she trusts more, which one is telling the truth? She has one guy who is exciting, good in bed and always making her laugh and she has another guy who is a little shy and reserved, keeps himself to himself and is more of a gentleman. Can you guess who wins?
So, that’s the basis of the story. The acting is great by everyone. It was actually nice to see a film with Hugh Grant in it that I actually enjoyed. Renne who played Bridget stole the show though and her acting was superb. I have never seen her in any other films but was told by my girlfriend that she has starred in other films and she put some weight on for this film, but then it was nice to see a ‘normal’ sized girl play a leading role instead of a stick insect! I could go through the film and tell you how good each actor was actually but theres no point in that, so I’ll just say that the how film was very well acted.
One of the things that most stood out to me in this film was the soundtrack which in my mind really made the film and put you in the right sort of mood and atmosphere for it all. The film opens with Bridget singing away to ‘All by myself’ and throughout the film there are songs that just do the film justice. If your interested, the soundtrack includes:
Out of reach – Gabrielle
It’s raining men – Geri Halliwell
Kiss that girl – Sheryl Crow
All by myself – Jamie O’Neal
I’m every women – Chaka Chan
So, just from those few songs I’m sure you can see what your in for and you can buy the soundtrack from the states if you wish. I’m waiting for it to come out over here and might thinking about buying it then, don’t know why as it’s full of love songs and it’s not really me but I found them really good in the film.
To sum it all up then, this is an excellent film and I thought it was a girlie film but it’s not. I found it very enjoyable and was laughing a lot as there are loads of funny moments throughout the film. It will give you an understanding of what girls want from a relationship too!
Go see it and if you can’t go see it in the cinema you just have to rent it when it comes out on Video and DVD, well worth watching and a superb movie!
Before I go, don’t leave the cinema when the credits start rolling as there are some extra funny bits while they are rolling which are worth watching aswell!
