First love

When I was in high school I was first introduced to this particular album by a friend. I fell in love with the band and have since then been a fan. That was more than 20 years ago, I think. As I evolved I discoverd that most of the songs were more mainstream while a few were vintage DS. I feel that DS’ forte is ballads. While miost of the songs were more crowd pullers and not reflective of the DS heritage. I mean, most of their hits are stories that follow a certain musical pattern while this particular album was I felt really trying to pull in the masses.

Anyway, the sound of Brothers in arms is very opposed to Money for Nothing. The sentiment is at odds. Perhaps thats what the market is all about. But the albums like Making Movies, Sultans of Swing, Romeo & Juliet, It never rains etc are all  vintage DS.

Mark Knopfler tries to carry the DS sound forward, in his solo career,  but keeps going off the reservation e.g. Neck to Neck(with  Chet Atkins). Golden Heart was a pretty nice album. A few vintage DS sounds there. Especially the title song! I haven’t been able to really pay attention to The Ragpickers Dream of Kill to get crimson but will be trying that soon.

I feel that we Dire Straits lovers are a dying breed. It’s more beat oriented now. And while the remixes take over the dance floors the grey haired dudes get the odd looks as they get lost in the past on the dance floor.

Any comments on that, guys? Is there life after such sounds? All of a sudden evolution does not sound like a nice thing. I mean how can you get around "Fuc k da police" and "A ss like that"
