Hard to hate, easy to love

When it comes to beer, Americans have a reputation for liking cheap swill. That ’’swill’’ is represented by mass-produced beer’s such as Budweiser, which is churned out of the Anheuser-Busch factory in St. Louis at an alarming rate.

Now, the assumption that American beer drinkers like thin swill is only partially true. If you were to find a group of Americans who really enjoy beer, you’d probably discover that many love those ’’heavier’’ brews such as Bass Ale or Guinness Extra Stout. You’d also discover that many of those same people also enjoy a moderately-priced domestic such as Budweiser.

Why is that? One of the heavier brews is absolutely great for celebrating, enjoying over a fantastic meal and other such times. For the more ’’common’’ times, though, grab one of those moderately-priced American brews. For those certain times, it’s hard to beat good ol’ Budweiser.

Budweiser, see, might not have the ’’punch’’ of the better beers, but it’s darn hard to find anyone who likes beer who will turn up his nose at a Budweiser. Sure, relax with a couple after work, have some at a cookout or keep some around at a party. Budweiser is a good ’’general purpose’’ beer that’s just what’s needed every now and again.

Budweiser, see, tastes as light as it’s pale, golden color suggests. This beer is, by no means, a full-bodied beer, but one that’s fermented with rice and charged with plenty of carbonation. Budweiser is fizzy, has a fairly bitter flavor and goes down almost as easy as water. The flavor there is a bit slight, really, and there is almost no aftertaste.

The flavor of Budweiser is hard to describe, of course. In a world of full-bodied beers, there’s not a lot of complexity to Budweiser. It’s a little bitter (as I’ve mentioned) and has hints of grain and a touch of sweetness mixed in there, too. It’s a pretty simple taste, really, and that’s no surprise -- this is mass-produced stuff that’s made quickly with inexpensive ingredients.

In spite of its shortcomings, Budweiser is a good, all-around beer. While drinking Guinness can leave one feeling quite full after a couple of bottles, Budweiser goes down smooth and easy. That’s good if you’re out having a beer on a hot day in the summer or just kicking one back to relax with after work. If you’ve got a special event to celebrate, stick with a better and more expensive beer. If, however, you’re just in the mood to ’’grab a beer, ’’ it’s hard to go wrong with Budweiser. In terms of moderately-priced, American beers, this one is at the top of the heap and is, by the way, one of the most popular beers in the nation.
